In Germany we have some TV channels that everyone has to pay 17€ a month for even if he does not own a TV, since it's supposed to be free press. Well guess what they still post ads and every journalist's story get's filtered through 5 comittees. This whole thing is so anti open source, anti freedom, corrupt and stupid. No wonder more than 4 Million just don't pay this shit.

    Just don't watch TV?

    @theNox the problem is you have to pay it even if you don't watch it. Even if you don't have a TV. It is "common servce" that everyone has right to use, but everyone is obligated to pay for it, even if they don't.

    So much facepalm for both of you. Please do me personally a favor and use this community for what it is meant for ... Dev problems.
    Please don't make this to a filterbubbled Twitter... Just my 2 cents

    @KnutKnutsen @maxsers is commenting about the spread of information following the open source idea also is not like devrant has an option to add stuff that is not longer devrelated, I personally bitch when users do nothing but post reshare of memes to death here without even making a comment about it and such, you know what is nice place for you mate? StackOverflow, Im sure they will love you there

    I'm pretty indifferent to this topic, in our household TV gets watched a lot (especially Kika because of my little siblings and ZDF_Neo watched by my parents from the German channels), so I think that the payment is ok for us and I don't really know about the ads, there are ads? I don't watch TV a lot so I don't really notice ads, besides the ones advertising shows on the channel which are perfectly fine for me. But I get that paying for it when you don't watch TV at all can be really annoying

    I guess this would make sense if they focused on informing the population about news and politics. But as people mentioned before, this is not the case at all. We have a so called Bundesversammlung which is a meeting of important people of the public, the parlament and other people. It happens once a year and I think think they elct the president (?). Instead of livestreaming this important political event they showed some romantic series that my grandma watches. Norbert Lammert, former president of the parlament, called this "strange" in his opening speech. Especially when you know that those tv channels duty to inform the public about politics is written in the constitution.

    I don’t think so badly about it (maybe Because I don’t have to pay for it because I’m 15), but funk and things like heute show are worth paying for.

    Any sources for the claim that the stories get "filtered"?

    I agree that there is a need for reforms. However, I still prefer these channels if the alternative is something like Fox "News"

    I am trying to think of anything similar in the U.S but I can not remember a time in which I had to pay for a channel regardless of me watching tv or not. This is fascinating.

    @Christian1998 @bcye beide Kanäle sind für 'n Ar***. Auch n24. RTL-Niveau.

    the thing is, in germany you dont only pay for 2 tv stations but for radio and websites too. the money you pay might be for tv stations who earn a lot kf money with advertisements but if you would stop paying, you would lose an important structure in a democracy. when ARD and ZDF had to check every word they say for possible collisions with thier advertisers, a lot of critical reports would be gone. also you pay the money so that culture is kept alive. but most important ARD and ZDF have reporters stationed in the Bundestag watching over the politicians without the fear of losing thier income.
