It is chilling to think that if earth is knocked out of its orbit and all surface life is frozen to death, earth’s own heat is enough to sustain deep ocean life for millions of years. They won’t care if we die — they never knew we existed at all.
When I realized that a non-anthropocentric worldview was a possibility, at least momentarily, my life changed for the better, and I don’t want to go back.

Yeah, deep ocean life where there is no light from the sun that the life forms depend on. All other ocean life will still die. What is the percentage that will survive? I guess less than 0.01%?

Also, it might be that those extremophiles eat stuff that depends on sunlight. And they will starve, obviously.

@Lensflare there are life forms there that feed on thermal energy

@Lensflare there was the time when aerobic life forms were a minority. Look at them now!

@kiki yes, when life forms get extinct, it often allows other life forms to spread and evolve.

I like that you used "chilling" in conjuction with the earth freezing.
