I'm fine with other people using for themselves but when you use services like gmail, Facebook and so on, chances are that someone who doesn't want to use those things gets their data into those companies anyways. My best friend used gmail so if I want to email him I'm already fucked.
Yeah the users should have the choice of what to use but also keep in mind that you might be taking someones choice(s) away. -
Correct. There will always be your "profile" with these companies. What I am trying to say is that people's attitude should change from "eh, whatever" to "I know what I'm doing".
-
@irene that's one way to think about it. But people can always be aware of privacy and security concerns. It is not difficult to be aware of what you are giving up based on what services you are using.
-
@irene There's a difference between being paranoid and how you bring something.
Also, how is caring/being conscious about how your data is used/what you expose paranoid? -
MatanRad7437yNo disrespect but... What do you mean by "owning you"? Selling to other companies what kind of cat videos I like? My friends and family?
So what? Who cares? I'm on the opinion that I have nothing to hide and I am interested in why I should worry (again, trying to spark conversation, not be disrespectful) -
cursee165957yThis kind of things exist even before technology, internet and Facebook Google though. The techniques weren't just powerful nor modern as of now 🤔
I'm not saying so we should give up our privacy and stuffs. I'm just saying that people most likely will still use them even after they know what they are giving. But of course at least they won't give a very private stuffs easily anymore once they are educated. But that kind of education will be and is actually done by the corporates themselves. Look at Facebook trying to improve their privacy and stuffs. Not 100% perfect, a superficial improvement but still majority of users can accept it.
In the end it is all business not even politics. And business always win. Sadly, but it does. -
@Artemix since when did Instagram start requiring bank records from their users.
-
@CurseMeSlowly That is my point. If people know what they are giving up, fair enough! But if they don't, it isn't fair to them.
-
Nah - im 14 and i am very reluctant to part with mha data.lol
Prolly cuz im a dev -
@Artemix Oh hey you linked to that post I did 😊
@ShahriyarRulez Well gmail is very safe (security wise) only as for privacy you're fucked. I personally use Tutanota.com as my main service, also have a mail server running myself :) -
I have educated my sister so well, she is paranoid. Better than spewing data out
-
@sslPoodle I do agree that protonmail is nice! I just like Tutanota more :). They really listen to their users (they implement the most asked for features first), respond fast and are more community-ish in general which I like.

"I have nothing to hide."
I admit, I did utter these disgraceful words once. But I now take privacy seriously.
What is really sad and potentially dangerous is the fact that younger people do not give a fuck about privacy. Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram - these people use these apps and do not pay ANY attention to what might be the consequences of their actions.
The more data they own, the more they own you. We should start a privacy basics course in high school. Things could get out of hand in the future, as if they already aren't.
