And when we're at it also ban all blinking cursors in unfocused text input fields.

This is why I block ads. Web performance can be a pita, even without ads (we don't all have a 50+ mbps connection) and there's examples of malware being served on very high rank sites through their ad partner networks. Furthermore, I know what I want and need when I want and need it.

I'm not saying I'm not influenced by ads, because I know that even people that know everything about them are also influenced. I just want to know what and when I let myself be influenced. On the www that would be as little as possible.

I know many companies and fellow devs earn their money through ads, but if I know up front I will never click on any or take them seriously, I won't make any difference seeing ads or not.

Lastly, ad networks rely heavily on my personal data like age, sex, location, localisation, etc. I try to protect myself a little by not only keeping some of that info to myself, but also by not allowing it to be used against me, so I block ads.

I find any websites to do with health, sports or fitness are disgusting in this regard. The content won’t even load until 3/4 of your screen is filled with ads and auto plays. Then the JavaScript times out on some dodgy script and you can’t finish the article because the “read more” button is fucked...

    Chrome://flags go turn it off

AT LEAST PUT SOME FUCKING PLACEHOLDERS.

Frequently I think this is a tactic to make you click the wrong place and for them to get a nice well-paying click-through instead...

On mobile especially the number of times I've clicked on the wrong link due to this makes me sad

I used to work on a beautiful, fast site with a global audience of 30million unique users and 1million+ registered members.

    It did this.

I can tell you from experience that the people who build the site and the people who organise and place the adverts are probably in different departments, in different buildings and maybe even in another country.

@SSDD And then you have the problem that users activate Adblock since it's extremely annoying.

You do know people do this to get more clicks right?

Also google is actually very much against this and will give penalties to those who misplace or misguide users to click on their ads.

@MasterSwagMan Yeah, it's obviously on purpose sometimes, these devs should never get internet again
