Linux438107yI'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux. -
dottedr1917y@R3zz0R lol, are you asking out for dates twitch streamers? It is not a normal question :) (at least in my perception)

@Linux
What the fuck did you just fucking type about me, you tech illiterate? I’ll have you know I was compiled with the highest process priority by Oracle, and I’ve been used in numerous enterprise-grade datacenters, and run on over 3,000,000,000 devices worldwide.
I have a built in compiler and have one of the most efficient and secure automatic memory management systems of any programming language. You are nothing to me but just dereferenced object. I will garbage collect the fuck out of you with memory array writes the likes of which has never been seen before on the Internet, mark my fucking words.
You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the socket connection? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am nullifying every reference to your control model and timing out your connections, so you better prepare for the exceptions, noob.
You’re null to me, kiddo. -

@Linux
Gnu is a toolchain (and an failed os).
One of the possible toolchains. That happened to be available. Like BSD userland was.
Saying gnu/linux or liGnux as RMS once advocated, doesn't cover it all,is reductive.
No way I consider Linux a OS (Debian is an OS, Android is an OS) nor I'll ever call it Gnu/Linux. Not unless it's a gnu built distro, like gnusense or Debian that choose that name.
Why?
Because apache/bind/perl/samba/python/lilo/musl/busybox/llvm/qemu/linux sounds equally stupid.
This gnu foundation stance is so petty, specially for those who were around when Hurd was going to be the next big thing and the linux kernel was just a convenient stopgap kernel to develop the it's toolchain. -

@plusgut
Because they never finished the kernel, Hurd.
Linux was a good thing at the right time. They probably owe as much to Linux as Linux to Gnu.
Had Linus gone in other direction, the GNU OS would probably be as relevant today as Minix.
Is openwrt Linux? Yes. Is it Gnu/Linux? No. Alpine Linux. Same. Android, etc.
All of this is not Wikipedia articles for me, I watched and don't forget many of what's been said at the time.
And RMS was hostile and patronizing towards Linux community, until he had to jump on board. Loudly. -
PacRat39907yboth are nice, arch is for masochists who have the time to sit and fix the stuff they break

If a woman asks how much you make just tell that she should be able the figure that out herself. She knows women only makes 70-80% of what men do on average.
-
@nbamaral lol thx for sharing! I didn't know RMS had changed to advocate for "Lignux" in the recent years.

@codebanana
Actually it was his first idea, not gnu/linux. Eventually he changed to the latter. He even used that as the Makefile target for emacs.

These were very destructive years, open-source software eventually won despite the political nonsense on its technical merit.
