@marthulu but then im left with Widnows Defender.... avast was good... once upon a time... perhaps I should give Defender a second chance?

Don't use Avast. Window's Defender is a fine antivirus. Not super super good, but most likely good enough.

Using Windows defender, ublock and practicing general computer security etiquettes give me a virus free windows experience till now.

And fast too.

Avast was never good and got worse..^^

I'm totally in love with kaspersky. These 30 bucks per year are completely okay with me for what i get.

But if you are slightly aware of what you are doing you don't need any antivirus besides the win defender..
MS got their shit together now as it seems.
Edge follows standards, built-in bash, antivirus.. you can actually work with their system these days without adding tons of software.
