I think people should always greatly over estimate the bill.

I always ask a 50% deposit before starting any major jobs or project. I once had to pay a client back part his deposit, because the project was way easier than I thought.

Clients who step back when the bill gets too large will give you too much hassles in the future and you'll always feel bad charging them the full price.
