its always good to have symmetric memory and also the brand... if you have a 4gb ram card currently then you shud get the exactly same one at the same clock speed (of the ram)... you cant put another freq ram and i have never tried putting another brand of ram with similar speeds ...

install CPUZ ... you ll need to research a little more regarding how much ram you can fit... use google or forums (plenty of them there)

or....
snap your old stick(s) in half
go on newegg (or amazon) and buy the same type of ram (DRR2/DDR3/DDR4)
Check your mobo, you prob have 4 slots, maybe two.
Buy 16GB in either 4 x 4GB or 2 x 8GB. (you could get 8gb, but 16gb is much cheaper now than a few years ago, you might as well do 16) If you get two sticks, insert them into the same color slot (google for the explanation why)
try to get memory with a higher clock speed (Mhz) -
rozzzly16718yand if you're talking about a laptop well same things but make sure you get laptop ram lol.

Get as much as you can afford/fit in your laptop. Make sure you buy the right type. Crucial.com will get you buying the right type and cheaply. Used their UK site many times.
