Hi,
I want to install linux besides windows on my new computer (i7-8700k, gtx 1080). I use debian with i3 on my laptop for work and want to have a similar development environment at home. Does anyone have an adive to choose between ElementaryOS and Arch, or just stick with Debian. i3-gaps will be the wm, I just can't use another one ;)
Does one distro has better support for Nvidia cards in fact I would like to try CUDA.
I do not have other requirements; mostly webdev with python in the backend, and a little c++ game with SDL. This should not be a problem in a new distro.

Thanks for some advices and pro/cons

Install Windows 10 and the Ubuntu subsystem.

Just please do that...be a normal fuckin' human being.

OpenSUSE or Debian make using the Nvidia drivers very easy.

@intromatt He clearly said that he WANTS to install linux alongside windows. He's also said that he has Debian at work and WANTS similar environment at his personal laptop. So I think we can safely assume that he has some prior linux experience and desires to continue using it, probably even prefers it.

Just seems like a terrible idea and I'm just trying to steer him right. You don't need to run a Linux VM anymore inside Windows as most of the stuff is available free from the Windows store (many people don't realize this).

Nothing wrong with helping people make the right decisions, right? Stop being such a grump.

    Respectfully..

@intromatt He is using Linux and he clearly enjoys it since he wants to replicate his current setup. Linux is just as good desktop OS as Windows, as long as your hardware is supported. And if you consider it to be such a terrible idea you may also provide some arguments supporting your opinion.

Yeah, you don't need to run Linux on a VM, you may as well run it on real hardware.

I will not answer your ridiculous question with any level headed logic because I see no point but the answer is very easy to Google.

    Stay strong.

@intromatt If you see no point in supporting your claims you may as well abstain from posting them. It doesn't contribute to the discussion in any way nor does it help the OP. Telling someone who probably already has Windows 10 installed (basing on the fact that he has windows and that the computer is new) to install windows on a post where he asks for Linux distro recommendation doesn't make any sense.

@SgnfcntOverflow Well, it does have some sense if you like engaging in conversations with people who like linux.

Yeah, the main fact is - and yes, I'm serios ;) - I freaking like i3 and my own workflow connected to it. Most things I can do with windows, like webdev or c++ with qtcreator. I'll try WSL, but a collegue had troubles specially with sdl (audio and gamecontrollers) during developing the game at university.

I think ubuntu is not bad.. especially, because it handles proprietary drivers automatically. Had some troubles with debian...

@scooter757 I'm i3 user myself and can understand the affection. I'm guessing something Arch-based would be good if you want to install latest NVIDIA proprietary drivers from the repository. As @fun2code already mentioned Antergos is great for hassle-free Arch installation. If you like Ubuntu, then go for it, but while more stable, its packages may be more outdated.

Makes perfect sense. Why struggle and waste timw when you don't have to? @SgnfcntOverflow
