So following a previous rant, I’ve decided to make the jump and move full time to a Linux setup on my PC, with a windows VM (I do much more Ruby and php at home than Windows stuff, so makes sense to use Linux as everyday os.

The question that I need help with is which distro to go with.

I have experience with Ubuntu, OpenSuSE, and Debian, but I’m not adverse to trying something new, I’m even toying with the idea of Arch (but with a few test runs on a vm first)

I've been a hard core Gentoo fan for years. My current install I've kept on rolling updates since 2012 (I clone it for new machines).

It's not for everyone; it is a pretty hard core developer OS. It's like Linux from Scratch with package management. But if you like knowing the internals and externals and ins and outs of Linux, it's a great distro for that. Here's me getting it working on a MacBook Pro (not recommended):

you dont need to switch to linux, linux lives inside windows with the Linux subsystem for windows 10.

@heyheni I have had a play with that, and while it’s works ok I just couldn’t seem to get on with it.
