Oh, youve worked on variety of technologies? Fuck you.

the one I hate the most is:
do x without y and add a and b to it. you have 1 hr. go.

When I've been lead, I've never hired based off CV since most people lie about their knowledge/experience. And I never have them write code since you can't judge anything on solving a FizzBuzz code task on paper or whiteboard.

Rather I ask about complex tasks and projects and hqve them walk me through verbally how they would approach solving it. By listening to what they say on a few of these I can almost always get a good enough feel for their skill level, how they will fit in, etc. Missing pieces of their coding skills are easy to add. I'm far more interested in their personality and problem solving skills. I couldn't care less if they can code a custom JavaScript library in a weekend. If they're an asshole, I can't use them.

In my experience, these people are throwing a test at you because anyone born after 1980 can throw together a resume full of buzzwords.
The test that they are giving you is probably more about observing/reviewing your problem solving skills in general. They have to give you a time limit, because let's face it, if they didn't we'd all be there for a few days because coders naturally think "sure it works, but it could work better!"
Anyway, in my opinion, they aren't so worried about you delivering a working prototype to them in under an hour. They just wanna take a look at your approach so they can decide if you'd be able to figure it all out once your on board.
