I am...only electronics, though. Heavy electrical stuff (power distribution, generation, motors etc.) is way beyond me.
And it is fun, for sure. Get yourself a basic electronics kit and start tinkering. -
@RememberMe Dont have time at the moment. There's other things that are a higher priority to learn at the moment. It'll probably be a year or so before I get the chance.
-
@Condor Indeed, here in India it's double as well. Wall socket accidents are way more "fun".
Let's just say that I've managed to trip the breaker a few times :p -
@Condor I was trying to make a power supply for my projects and somehow the FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER module I had built for it blew up.
Back to batteries it is. -
@Condor problem with 1N4007 is the 1A current rating (I think?). Too less.
I don't quite remember which diodes I had used, but I think they should've been able to take the voltage.
I actually think assembly was my problem, I'm not exactly the best at making stuff.
I think I'll give it another try. -
I love it, but being the pathetic physical specimen that I am, I have very twitchy hands so assembling small circuits is really frustrating.
I would love to do something with PCBs, but I dare not touch SMD components because I would probably literally go crazy. -
@Condor @RememberMe @7400 @franga2000
Here's a video you all might enjoy!
This is a CS (from what I can understand from other videos) student in Canada who made this as a side project for fun/learning experience. I'd love to one day recreate something similar. This is what made me realize it could be a really fun hobby lol

As a hobby it's freaking amazing, don't pick up a major in it though, just because of it, as it's pure hell, if you're not into the very detail of math lol
-
@JoshBent Fucking hate math lol.
I have a lot of friends who are majoring in electrical engineering. It's a common major, because they can get an associate's degree in 2 years for little to nothing at the local community college and start a job building and wiring beach houses. (A pretty popular to live/visit beach is like 30 minutes away from me, so there's always more houses being built.) -
@Stuxnet oh, yeah I forgot, right, there's also the way through college, where most go to get the more "advanced" degree to have better chances for wiring and installation jobs
-
@JoshBent Hardly call it an "advanced" degree lol. Most get the most basic college degree and get a job. Very very few go and get a second level degree, even though they could probably charge more for their work if they did.
-
@Stuxnet well I meant some can drop out even before that and go search for a job, then do the junior position and learn yourself into it, the more "advanced" is the one people do, to get the paper that they have the basics n stuff basically, so they can go for the "better" paid jobs and positions, the even more advanced one, would be as you call the second level degree and pay even more, than the previous mentioned ones.
-
@JoshBent True. But this is a community college. The tuition is like $70 per credit hour. So you take 14 hours a semester for 2 years and it's dirt ass cheap lol. Not to mention, they have scholarships for like $3k that almost everyone gets. Might as well just stick through it for 2 years and you'll have that pretty piece of paper people like to see.
-
@Stuxnet well, some are even too "cool" for that, so they skip even that easy chance.
-
@Stuxnet just noticed, you found devon too, nice, I stumbled on his channel just recently too
-
@Stuxnet he's just very dedicated, he learns a lot through googling, trying and learning
How many are into electrical engineering as a hobby? It looks like a really fun hobby I wouldn't mind picking up.
