Unixxx3637yNo, but i stopped not that long ago. A friend of mime is still running an irc server...
-
spyke14617y@M4xammo a friend of mine ran a network for about the last 17 years which he just fiiiiinally pulled the plug on a few months ago. I was heartbroken haha
-
spyke14617yOh and btw... Ironically(and idk how I didn't make this connection before)the network name was "Slacked" #rip irc.slacked.org
-
nanl20567yIRC is amazing, I learned a lot there in a day when Google didn't even exist. It was a great place to share knowledge. I stopped using it since my favorites servers were shut down. I have good memories, though. By the way, the first time I heard about Google was in a IRC channel.
-
sigfried5327y@jespersh lol, you want the Russians to read your chat? I would stay away from Telegram. It's good, but I don't trust the Russians (sorry for who I insulted).
-
hjk10156967yI use IRC. Freenode is still relevant. Scales really well. Love the simple protocol. Slack has value as well though. It's easy to integrate and the file send/preview is handy as well as syntax coloured as snippets.
Convinced yet? -
eeee31227yIs IRC safe? Has the technology evolved with all the security developments through the years?
-
@ryankrage77 nope. only in secured chats. i really love telegram for its apps, freatures and general UI/UX, but no. chats (except private chats) are not e2e encryped, instead they're stored completely in the telegram could for you. thats also one reason i love it. i've never lost a chat. but privacy... ehrm... yeah - not so much.
if you want to read more: https://telegram.org/faq#security -
I use IRC every now and then... but lately, I mostly use Discord...
I don't really like Slack tbh (the setup of a workspace isn't very intuitive)...
shameless self-promoting:
For those interested in a small community with devs: https://discordapp.com/invite/...
Don't leave DevRant, but see it as something that one can use beside it :) -
totoxto2487y@eeee what is your expectation of safe? No end to end encryption, tls is supported by many servers for traffic encryption, but only between yourself and the server so if you send a message in a channel it will probably go to the server encrypted and come out in the clear when sent to other users. Your ip may or may not be visible to other users.
-
spyke14617y@FinlayDaG33k I absolutely love Discord tbh, it's genius to have browser functionality alongside a standalone app, such a low barrier of entry when you can just toss your friends a link to click on.
-
@spyke Exactly.
and everything you need is available:
Voicechat, text-chat, bot capabilities, multiple channels, multiple servers in 1 app etc. etc. -
sjzurek4487yWe use IRC at work.
Our boss is fuckin second to Mr Robot. He runs his own server. #hardcore
Everything else sucks. -
Slack is more for people that likes more GUI and premium plans
IRC is actually for hipsters
Btw, I still use IRC -
Lythenas2427y@FinlayDaG33k I agree. Except when they have server problems. Happened to me twice in the last three weeks or so. I couldn't join a server or I couldn't here the others. But it was usually fixed after a 5 min.
-
@Lythenas Generally when that happens, I just change the server location (generally swap between East and West Europe).
This does mean voice is down for a slight second, but ah well. -
I still use some ircs, been mostly on discord lately. Forced to use slack for school and I'm not a fan personally.
-
The one thing I don't like about IRC is that any messages received while you're on IRC client was turned off are gone forever.
-
hjk10156966y@nanl May Is ask how old you are? I got an invite to Gmail on IRC back in the day when it was beta. I think Google came along before I got into IRC, not sure though.
-
hjk10156966y@nanl probably knew Google before Gmail. I now remember that the guy sending me the invite weeks surprised I never heard of Gmail. Can't imagine not knowing about Google too. I'm 33 so guess where from the IRC generation 😃
am I the only one who still uses IRC?
