This dude from the advertising agency I'm currently having a little job wants to convince me to go study media informatics/cs instead of going into the game scene.

I'm scared of my future, is that fine?

    @Alice Thanks, Mrs Pinkie ^~^
    As if my plans were that exact xD

    He's not forcing me, just telling me how good I'd be..
    The thing about the game industry is: Either you go risk and make your own game (indie) or you go "safe" and work for a big studio. I kinda like and hate both.

    @Alice I never thought of that lol

    I just know e.g. valves rolling tables. Work on anything you want, motherf-! :p

    Well, having worked in the hellhole that is educational game development, I can say that once something becomes an industry, it sucks the life and joy of everything in it.
    I've moved to a more traditional dev job now (banking) and feel far happier.
    The love for gamedev is still there and now I can work on my own projects.
    His suggestion is wise from an industry perspective, and yet won't stop you from doing what you love :)

    @Oel2 thanks for your perspective as well!
    And welcome to devRant <3

    My two cents;

    I went to a private institution for games(not University, this entire place was dedicated to games development)

    I got a job straight out of it, after 3 years, I quit to pursue a more traditional position which was relatively easy.

    What I am saying is; pursue games, don't be afraid to put up your hand for working on things outside of what you learnt. ( Server dev, web dev, etc)

    If after 3 years you don't enjoy working in games, just look for another job. It wouldn't be hard for you at that point.

    @BambuSource
    I should also mention, I never went to University, so I've got no real qualifications apart from my game dev one.

    Just do what you like.. don't listen to others about your future job. A few years back (-/+ 10), everyone was telling me to join the army as commander, but I wanted to be a dev.. it was all I was hearing from family and friends.. even in a job- related test, the results was telling me to join the army, due to some of my answers. Eventually I became a Java developer and I have not regreted it! ( Ok some bugs may have made me to regret it) My advice, if you are able, follow your dreams. You are the only one, who is responsible for your happiness! It will be a hard road ahead but totally Worth!!
