    This happens with me all the time, lol (for me the heavy program in question is Autodesk Maya)

    @hugh-mungus I do use shortcuts, but often if i already have my hand on the mouse it's faster closing with the x.
    Also do alternative windows manager exist on Windows ?

    That's the problem with focus stealing :D
    It used to be so that it did not happen on *nix systems but now it happens on both Windows and *nix systems
