We live in a world where portability is more important than usability.

I've got to buy a fucking adapter just to get enough USB ports to use a mouse and keyboard with a monitor, as well as ports for other things like my laptop fan.

It's also becoming evident with the lack of headphone jacks to save that 0.000001" of phone size. It's fucking bullshit that adapters are required to charge phones and listen to music at the same time.

It does seem a little like we’re heading towards a world of having just one mega-port on everything.

    It's a pretentious world

I fear the usability battle is being lost. The trend is against us.

@platypus I understand needing to find a balance... I've carried a 5 pound (2.3 kg) laptop and a 3 (1.4 kg) pound laptop at the same time. Holy fuck, walking like 2 miles with this much weight was ridiculous.

I never plan on carrying the 5 pound laptop around like that ever again. But 3 pounds is light enough by all means.

@stuxnet. Indeed. There's a balance. I wasn't always against smaller, but I do feel it's really impacting functionality these days.

It's compounded by the fact that the majority of vendors seem to follow the same path.

There is the argument that it's what the market wants, I guess.

    I'm not typical. There's a shock.

USB-C will come and safe us all!

You can still easily get devices with all the ports available. It is always up to you. And no, not all of them are super heavy or from a gaming series.

You want to talk usability get a desktop and use that. Honestly desktops are the only computers I can be truly productive on. Three screens and ports for more, as many USB ports as I want, full size mechanical keyboards with real and satisfying feedback on key presses, a real mouse, virtually unlimited computing power, quiet and efficient water cooling, and best of all no bullshit throttling because the shitty all in one aluminium chassis can't keep up with the CPU running at full speed for more than 2 minutes.

@asinglenoob Yea you see here there's this thing called tuition and rent and food.

I don't have the money to toss around on a desktop like it's $10.

Heh. My MBP sits in a dock at work. With 2 external monitors that means 3 screens. External keyboard and touchpad are connected via Bluetooth. Still have open ports for USB drives etc.
