When asking for a raise, how do you guys know, how much to ask for / how much are you worth?

I've been working as a programmer for the last year and a half, and it's my first real gig in the sector. Without getting into much details, I've currently the opportunity to ask for a raise, but I don't know what would be an appropriate amount or how to research or calculate it.
Any input would be very much appreciated.

I asked for 20% but that was mostly because I was making too little for my position to begin with. They accepted it but for you I would suggest 10-15%.

The thing is, how do I know if I'm making to little? I'm in another country, so even though I'm making more than my peers back at mine, I can't compare against my coworkers or don't know what's the norm here.
A normal raise usually would be about 10-15%?

I would say anything less than 10% isn't worth asking for.
