All the while people who dont understand AI look at developers thinking they should be done already with the button.

tosensei908010h> ask AI to solve math problem
well, if you use a toaster to wash your clothes, you're gonna have a shitty result as well. but trust me - it's not the toasters fault. -
@jestdotty primarily? making money and gathering loads of data for the rich people who offer them via cloud services to dumb people who believe that LLMs are the solution to all their problems.
on a less cynical level: execute very simple instruction based on natural language (in constrast to constructed, discrete languages like mathematics or programming languages).
also, keep in mind that LLMs are basically just in their infancy. and that LLMs are just one _very specific_ subtype of "AI" in general. please don't add unnecessary confusion by mixing up the terms, you're confused already as it is. for example, in graphic processing, AI can be used for upscaling/frame generation to increase performance and visual fidelity. -
@jestdotty Well, to be fair it's called generative AI for a reason, so I'd say the "real" purpose would be using it to generate Natural Human Language stuff
Like stories, descriptions, stuff like that.
Can't say it does it VERY GOOD, but definitely better than logical stuff like math and programming. And it's not bad if you use it(I mean generated language stuff, not logical stuff) as a proof of concept and then write something on top of that -
@SoldierOfCode yeah I was just walking through test cases by writing them out in the comments so I could do them in my head before I wrote the code
but the AI kept trying to auto fill the math and getting it wrong (though this was a different rant)
this particular rant was me trying to get it to suggest ways to solve a particular problem. it identified that my problem was of a certain problem form but claimed this problem can't be solved in mathematics. whether that's true in mainstream or not I don't know. but it wasn't trying to solve the math itself, it was just condensing whatever was written on Wikipedia or something (though sometimes they do try to solve the problem)
... lol ask AI to solve math problem
it says it's X and Y called math problem, and has no solution
while I'm reading that, I figure out the solution
AIs are so dumb they're giving me arrogance
