Taking online privacy to the next level?

Not entirely sure but I've gotta say that it feels awesome to run an instance of searx.me on my own server and kind of use my own server for searching stuff online now!

Fuck yeah.

    @undef For now yeah as I haven't put an htpasswd yet and I'm going to dive into NOT keeping logs tomorrow, just happy that I got it working at all for now 😅
  • 5
    @undef If anyone would be interested I could make a public version as well but you'd have to trust me on not using logs as there's no way I could prove that.

    And I understand that trusting someone on that can be hard.
  • 1
    @linuxxx I'd be 100% with that idea
  • 0
    @TheOct0 Which idea? 😅
  • 0
    @TheOct0 rephrase: I get which idea but the last time had an idea like that it got shot down here ( I understood why though)
  • 3
    Interesting! I didn't even know that searx supports the deployment of private instances. How does it take care of the indexing? Does it pull a central database or something like that?
  • 1
    @linuxxx I meant having a public version of that

    Oh, how much I'd like to have 70€ to spend on privacy per month...

    And what was your last idea?
  • 0
    @Condor It takes data from other search engines. Except for that I recommend you read the docs ;)
  • 1
    @TheOct0 Do you mean me running one or in general?

    And I work full-time so yeah can afford that :)
  • 0
    @undef A public pihole. But of course you couldn't be sure that I wouldn't log anything because you can't access the server.
  • 2
    @linuxxx I mean yours :)

    In a perfect world it would be mine, but heh
  • 2
    @linuxxx The public pihole would be a great idea, but yeah the trust factor would be a thing :/
  • 1
    @TheOct0 But that's the same with the search thing I'd imagine or would that be different?
  • 0
    @AlpineLinnix Haven't checked yet 😅
  • 5
    @linuxxx I don't know. I'm not really about the trust factor (as in I would trust you, for example) but more about the monopoly certain companies have, and the intensive data gathering going on. The trust factor is an issue for everything that isn't self-deployed, but I don't really care as long as it's someone I can talk to for example. It's way clearer in my mind, trust me x)
  • 3
    @TheOct0 Nah I get it haha, I'll put up an instance tomorrow if I have time :) (want to do one analytic: a counter as for visits 😊)
  • 2
    @linuxxx No problem, don't put too much effort into this :)

    P.S: I'll just remind you about that email 0:)
  • 1
    @TheOct0 Yeah I'm in bed now due to excruciating back pains and going to sleep soon and don't have that tutanota account on my phone so will take a look tomorrow!

    Are you on signal by the way?
  • 2
    @linuxxx Yes I am!

    And you have my support for the back pain
  • 1
    @TheOct0 Oohh! We've got a group chat going on, interested maybe? Mostly privacy and security minded devRanters (have to confirm it with them first)
  • 2
    @linuxxx Yes, I would be interested :)
  • 1
    @linuxxx Erm... How would you invite me to it? I have mostly used it for SMS, sooo... ^^'
  • 1
    @TheOct0 I'll give instructions if the other members give an okay haha
  • 1
    @linuxxx Yeah, I understand, but would it be a link or would I have to give you my phone number?
  • 1
    @undef Seems logical
  • 0
    @TheOct0 Phone number it would be
  • 1
    @linuxxx Well then as undef suggested PGP would be appreciated (or I could give it to you in an email)
  • 1
    @TheOct0 Email would be the best option!
  • 1
    @linuxxx Email it will be then, tell me whenever (and if) and I'll send it :)
  • 0
    @linuxxx ah I'm also interested in the group if you don't mind!
  • 1
    @linuxxx I don't know if you wanted your group to gain that much steam, but people seem to be interested in it. If you don't want these aspiring members to deal with (including me) feel free to delete your comment and not integrate me, I wouldn't want to cause any trouble to your group :(
  • 1
    @linuxxx "Dude, even if you were to keep logs, the Internet was made to share porn, it's okay if you know what I like to watch."

    Seems like a really interesting idea honestly.

    PS: Might want to ask what people think about a little "tip" from time to time. While not paying for the full service, I'm sure some wouldn't mind helping you a little.
  • 0
    @TheOct0 and I'll delete my comment as well if that is an issue!
  • 0
    Pin, interested if you open it.
  • 1
    @undef As far as I remember, Linuxxx doesn't really like Keybase because they store metadata.
  • 1
    @Jilano Actually I'm not entirely sure how it works with their metadata, I've got an account but haven't logged in for ages 😅
  • 2
    @Jilano C-could I just ask for that? 😅

    And @The0ct0 you're in, asked the people. @yendenikhil sure! I've known you for a little now :)
  • 1
    @linuxxx awesome, thanks!
  • 0
    @undef I'd love to add you but for about all people in that group you're an entire stranger and I know that they wouldn't be okay with that, sorry :/

    I'll keep you in mind though, possibly for later on ;)
  • 1
    @yendenikhil @TheOct0 Just one note; what is said in that group, stays in that group as we also talk about personal things :)
  • 0
  • 0
    @linuxxx I like this idea, you gotta have a sponsor (in our case you) and vetting mechanism!
  • 0
    @yendenikhil What? 😅
  • 0
    @linuxxx to join group. Not open for everyone, and the only way to join is to have sponsor!

    If I'm not making sense blame the groggy morning! (I'm not build to wake up early and for Sunday 9 is fucking early)
  • 1
    @yendenikhil Oh like that! Well, in general everyone has to agree. Mostly not everyone is online but I know (most of the time) who would be okay with that or not :)
  • 0
    @yendenikhil Could you message me on signal again? Lost your number 😅
  • 0
    @linuxxx 3rd time is charm..lol. messaged
  • 0
    What about the resources usage? I'd love to host one locally, but my server (an RPI 3) has already 18 containers, so I'm not sure if ti could handle it.

    As for the group, I'd like to join it too, but I can understand why you wouldn't want me in :(
  • 0
    @NefixEstrada I'll keep you in mind as well!

    And what resource usage exactly?
  • 0
    Basically RAM, but the CPU is a bit overhelmed too @linuxxx
  • 0
    @NefixEstrada Hmm I'm running the pihole and vpn but the load stays below 50...
  • 0
    I was talking about the Searx.me one :")
  • 0
    This is my RPI one
  • 0
    And the number of containers @linuxxx...

    :D
  • 0
    The normal 3b
  • 0
    @NefixEstrada Oh that one runs on one of my vps's :)
  • 0
    Oh, I see
  • 1
    @TheOct0 I run a public pihole. But I doubt you trust me.
  • 2
    @linuxxx Hey hey :)

    Of course what is said there stays there, it's about _privacy_! Gossip, leaks and this kind of stuff is the exact opposite ^^'
  • 3
    @ewpratten Well I don't trust you because you haven't earned it (I am very selective with who I trust) but I would be fine with using a pihole from you, since I know you wouldn't have any interest from it

    To be clear I don't "trust" linuxxx either, since I have only started talking with him, but a search engine can't do harm (at least, to me) and he wouldn't have any interest in my data either :)
  • 1
    @TheOct0 aside from the fact that is currently disabled for several maintenance, I wouldn't mind giving you the IP.
  • 2
    @ewpratten Well it's nothing too urgent, and I have other things to think about currently, but thanks :)
  • 1
    @TheOct0 are you a signal user?
  • 2
  • 1
    @ewpratten Well actually I do, at the moment :/

    As I said I have other things to take care of before thinking about using a pihole, so I will keep the tuta.io address in mind for when I have time, and I'll send you my number then :)

    Thanks for the effort though
  • 1
    @TheOct0 You do realize that ewpratten is in the group chat...?
  • 2
    @linuxxx I didn't know that, but it wasn't about giving my number, it was about getting in touch for the pihole ^^

    I just didn't want to give my number without a reason :)
  • 1
    @linuxxx I realize that now. Haha.
  • 1
    @ewpratten *unable to use signal*
    cries
  • 1
    @irene If you can provide me a way to do that whole retaining my job and my social life, please let me know!

    Other than that, what's your point?
  • 2
    @irene Yet I do not know your real name, address, heck even just an email address or social media account, IP address or anything like that. But you are here with us on the internet. That's privacy, the ability to not share everything out there in the open (unlike average Facebook user who geotags and face-tags every fucking thing they post or see).

    Anonymity on the other hand, the internet wasn't designed to allow for that (even with the use of Tor, correlation attacks are possible) and it shouldn't ever accommodate for that. When people have a method to not be held accountable for their actions.. you get /b/ on the entire internet at best, and thriving criminality at worst. Humans are despicable creatures - me included - and accountability along with enforced laws are the only things that keep a society in check I think.. people might say "Oh I want to follow the law! Even without it I'd be a good person". Bullshit. Greed is baked into humans, and laws constrain that. Without laws and accountability, you essentially get the Purge.

    So yeah.. privacy and anonymity, 2 different things. One of them is possible but kind of impractical with all the data-hungry trackers these days, the other isn't and shouldn't be possible.
