how is a chatting app like whatsapp, with 55 billion messages sent per day, earning money without using ads?

Arent they making you pay after 1 year of service?

Anyway its facebook now, so its not an issue if you can gather data through a simple app without ads and use that data in corelation with others services to ensure more targeted ads

As far as I remember they were using custom xmpp and ejabbered server. That was no rocket science to use battle tested technology and language that is widely used in telecommunication (erlang) into messaging. It’s able to handle 2m+ users on single machine. So the costs are not so high as you think.
