I think you should get your degree. whether or not it's a waste of time, it adds to your experience and professional look and I'm sure it'll come in handy when you look for a career/job.

fyroc58748yIt's not a waste of time but it's a waste of money. I dropped out of college because I wanted to work instead. I took a chance on a small dev firm doing part-time front-end work. Now, I am a software engineer developing with many different languages and platforms. The only issue with me not going to college is that I'm stuck developing forever... I can't change careers because I have 10 years experience of development, but no degree. I want become a teacher... but I can't now. I'm also afraid of getting old and not being able to keep up with the younger developers. Where will I be in the next 10 years?

BartBB6898yI see. Why not study now? Some companies will even fund your degree. Give it a shot! @fyroc

BartBB6898yThank you for the reply. I will most likely start studying as soon as the next semester starts but I'm still not feeling like it's the right choice. I mean, I've been dreaming of a software engineer degree since the 8th grade but lately I've been having second thoughts @EasyUltra

If you have the chance to gain experience whilst earning in the industry, like an apprenticeship, I would take that. However, a degree may be the only way in for you.

For me the most valuable things you can get from university are:
General knowledge - Different units, assignments and projects will help you develop your knowledge and stretch your intelligence by challenging you in ways that you wouldn't if you did not attend to the uni.
The networking - Speaking for myself, I met a lot of people during the degree, I made my best friends there, I met my gf there, and these connections were fundamental to me, as I landed my job by indication of a friend.
You can definitely network outside school and grow your knowledge too, no doubt about it, and you won't spend tons of money or fall in debt, but I think this option will be much more challenging, and you need to be very very focused to reach your goal.
Have a think about these two things and let us know if that makes sense to you 😉 -
skonteam9828y@BartBB have you got any knowledge about design principles for software systems ( OO Solid ,design patterns , architectural patterns...)?
know any architecture like SOA , n-tier ...?
if yes a degree will just be a line on your CV , even if you don't know those things , there's a lot of good literature on the net . Good Luck. -
BartBB6898yThank you for sharing your opinions. I decided I won't give up getting a degree.

A previous rant made me start doubting my choices.
I just graduated from college (but college here is probably not what you call college. You choose whether you do one more year and gain the 'x technician' certificate or you do two years and get the 'practical engineer' degree)
Hope you understand it.
Anyway, so I continued 1 year (I skipped 1 year so it's like I did the whole two years) and I have a practical engineer degree in electronics.
I love programming and really want to work in the field but (since I know nothing about the market) I don't even know if I'll get a job without going to university and getting a degree (which I want to get, I want to learn Software Engineering though, not CS)
So now to my question, do you guys truly think getting a degree will be a waste of my time?
tl;dr I want to get a Software Engineer degree, but a lot of posts say it's a waste of time. Who agrees and who doesn't?
