Apparently my classmates are open source enthusiasts and know nothing about how to use git.

My brother in law also loves open source and is not a dev.

Open source is not just good for devs but also for consumers.

That is fine. Open Source predates git. The fact that it is one of the most widely used version control tools does not mean anything for the end user.

For example, I have friends that use Linux religiously without being developers. It ain't a mutually exclusive deal so people can be unaware of it and still be fine.

For me open source is more about it's spirit and less about technology!
