I find it quite entertaining how "psychologists" think that people with autism/Asperger have difficulty making eye contact in general. Whenever I talk to fellow engineers, people that I like talking to and feel comfortable with, I look them in the eyes at pretty much the same rate as a regular person would. But the thing is.. looking someone in the eyes expresses interest!

Data findings and years of study and assertions normally point to general conclussions. There are of course exemptions of whatever the study was. So I kinda get why they would believe something on a general level like that. We must also consider that the vast majority of studies are done on children which will not have the advanced perception of human interaction and selective social interaction that you might have. I find the readings pretty cool, but I take them with a grain of salt since I know that saying that people with asperger syndrome can't possibly show aaaall characteristics that the studies find.

@irene and intense. I look at people in the eye to make them feel uncomfortable sometimes. I have a thousand mile stare and proudly use it on people :P

@AleCx04 Well yeah, generally speaking I do look away from people. But I doubt that it's got to do with Asperger's when I can actually have a normal and very interesting conversation with a fellow engineer while maintaining regular eye contact, just like how regular people would talk about gossips or things like that I guess. And yeah most studies are conducted on kids.. I've been one of them. Probably not a bad thing, but generalizing such a broad spectrum like that in my opinion is - given that it's so diverse. From personal experience and hearsay from others, I did find that people kinda "grow/learn" to understand social innuendo (to make up for lack of intuitive understanding), learn to live with their "disability" and over time get better at hiding it from people. I guess that while I don't like the stamp either, I just want to get it out there. This is what Asperger's is, it isn't caused by vaccines or anything but genetics, it isn't cancer, it isn't curable or whatever people like to believe... Just a different wiring of the brain, so to say.

@Condor it is as you said my man. And i hate it when people just take the studies made on Asperger as the end all be all of facts where the reality can be so different.

@irene Who knows? But unless you get social issues that lack some kind of explanation, I'd suggest not testing against it. Well you could but do it privately. The "stamp" is a terrible thing. It depicts autism as a disability - and generally it is - but fortunately I've been lucky enough to have Asperger's instead (and I guess that most people who do have autism here would have Asperger's too). It's pretty much the lucky jackpot of autism. Enhanced intelligence for the price of social skills, which can be learned anyway. The stamp.. well it gets me certain governmental advantages. But it kinda sucks when you have to explain it to (supportive) people. And many see it as a disadvantage, so there's that...

Oh well. Nature chooses to gift people with what they deserve. I guess that Asperger's depends on how you look at it. It's a trade-off that can be looked at both positively and negatively, both being equally valid.

If I wanted, really really wanted to look someone in the eyes all the time.. I'd ask her to engage in a relationship with me, because then I cannot take my eyes of her... lel

Like someone? Look at his eyes when he / she isn't looking and move your eyes when that person looks at you... That's flirting.
Mad about someone? I'm usually very polite and let my eyes do the talking. Win most arguments this way.
Not interested in talking? Look away... The other person still talking? Beware, he won't shut up no matter what.
Mad about someone? Just give him/her the evil eyes 👀...

I feel staring at the eyes makes both sides uncomfortable so I've learned that staring at the breasts for women or crotch area for men allows them to remain uncomfortable while not bothering me.

Well, I'm pulling this out of my memory, let's see if I remember right.
There are 3 types of people.
The don't touch me, the eyes, and the touch...
10% of people are don't touch me... they don't look you in the eyes and don't really like to get touched.
30% are the eyes... they let the eyes do the talking, but still may feel not comfortable about touching...
and 60% are the touch me... that people that love to hug, kiss, hugs friends, jump on friends on the club...
I'm a mix of eyes and touch me... :D depends on the person I'm interacting with.

It looks like most nerds here are the don't touch me type...
