Walked into the networking area to visit my network guys and sys admins.

They just got a whoooole bunch of equipment.

Shit looks intimidating af man. Mad respect for you sys admins and networking people. Seems like a really cool job, difficult and challenging at the same time!

    Hardware used to be a repelling idea to me. But now I'm embracing it and get an IT degree instead of CS.

    Should be interesting.

    @Stuxnet wait, isn't IT more to do with practical software engineering? At least, that's IT in India. CS is the one with subjects like computer organisation and architecture.

    @RememberMe Not that I know of.

    From glancing at my course list, it's nothing like CS, aside from some of the electives being CS classes.

    @RememberMe (europe) cs is mostly maths and theoretical stuff like optimalization, IT is almost 100% programming

    @Stuxnet I see.

    @ganjaman yeah, we have that too, but we also have a few (mandatory) hardware (or at least hardware design) courses.

    Networking is fun and challenging, but it lacks the appeal of code.

    I was never quite happy as a network admin.

    @Root oh i feel ya. I would never trade what I do for it. But i respect and like the field and would like to know a bit more about it.

    @Stuxnet u____u can't say I condone that brother. But if it is what you want you have my full support!!
  • 2
    @RememberMe i would say it depends on the school. Mine was heavily focused on software engineering and the theory behind it all plus a fuckload of math.

    Like...a fuckload and I loved every minute of it.

    Ya boi is good with numbers

    @AleCx04 I'm slowly accepting that web dev may be the dark dark road I walk down in my future.

    🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️ CS just isn't for me anymore. Part of it is the fucking stupid general education requirements that come with that being my major. The other half is a fear of graduating but still being a shit programmer that can't get a job with $20k or so in debt.

    But like I said, I'm starting to find interest in hardware shit, and I actually enjoy web design/dev, what little bit I do. (Thinking about trying to get my first customer with a freelance job soon.)

    But I really want to get into security for a career. Supposedly it's one of the highest in demand jobs (according to an article I read not too long ago) in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area (biggest job market for tech industry in NC).

    I got at least 2 more years to figure this shit out.

    And I'm going to code for fun still, kinda like linuxxx

    @AleCx04 GOD THE MATH IS DRIVING ME INSANE DUDE. (And unlike you, I fucking suck at math)

    I'm on class #6 and there is supposed to be a 7th one for CS. Fuck off with the math. Plus they want me to take 2 lab classes and an extra science lecture.

    Nah I'm good. I'll pass on that nonsense.

    @Stuxnet i kinda sucked at it for a while. Not in the sense of not understanding it, but in neglecting damn near alll the fundamental math thst would have prepared me for uni.

    I panicked pretty good during my first math class and suddenly obsessed about it.

    At one point i had to debate if I wanted to pursue more studies in math. I dig it, and the main reason is that i want to do other kinds of projects

    @AleCx04 numbers ftw

    @Stuxnet not just in that area, in general, security is a pretty in-demand thing all over the world. Depends on what kind of security you want to go for, though, if it's penetration testing, then you may want to start ASAP by teaching yourself online and then interning somewhere, or at least taking the courses for it if you have them.

    Actually that goes for any kind of security career.

    Also, I find the image of a guy called "Stuxnet" doing security work absolutely hilarious xD

    @Stuxnet that fear of being in debt and not getting a job is real, man. I'm applying to the US for Masters this year, just looking at the tuition and other fees gives me a mini heart attack each time I open the Excel sheet where I've put all the unis I'm applying to, lol

    @RememberMe Stuxnet was what kinda got me interested in cyber security and viruses, so I decided to lay homage to where it all started lol

    And yea I know. I've been doing a bit of research to learn, but I've gotta actually dig deep seriously, not just for shits and giggles.

    @Stuxnet hunh, interesting

    Stuxnet got me interested in this stuff too. Then I went on to study it in depth in a project I did for a course on Information Security, that pushed me towards considering embedded systems and their security as a thing I'd be interested in, so I'm applying for that (and computer engineering in general, not CS) as a masters topic.

    I didn't discover a love of math until calculus.

    That's not entirely true: I fell in love with trig, and promptly fell back out of love because the school system is absurdly terrible.

    Trig is still amazing, but calculus is beautiful.

    Algebra? Ugghhh
  • 1
    @Root i love em all :D specifically Algebra and Calculus!!

    @AleCx04 I'm terrible at algebra. 🙁
    Makes calculus harder.
