Discovered that somehow a lot of emails sent to my gmail have not been going to Inbox for years... Spent all day going thru them and deleting most.

And going forward it seems in going to have to write an app that puts all these v emails back into the inbox, do at least I know I'm getting them...

Huh, where did they end up instead?

@ihatecomputers somewhere in the account. Dunno how Gmail works, this thing has been confusing for years... Is it a folder or label and for a given email where the duck is it.

Short answer I guess they were in the All Messages folder taking up space...

Either grouping, or you've set up a filter.

    Grouping:
Click the cog-wheel on the upper right and click Configure Inbox

    Filters:
Same cog, Settings, tab "Filters & blocked addresses"

I pull all of it to a local imap server, normalising all the "folders" and deduplicate the messages.
Hint: all your email is also in a folder [all mail], that includes sent and deleted messages. It's inside [Gmail] folder (I think, it's Sunday won't bother checking)
