Got an Acer 18.5" monitor.
Took me more than an hour to get correct resolution on my lubuntu.
And still looking for answer and fixing.
I know I will eventually fix it soon (hopefully).
But this kind of things shouldn't exist in this days and age :/

I got a pretty generic 20" monitor and it fucks with the ratio for some things, and I've got no idea how to fix it. I spent probably 30 minutes Googling how to try and fix it and it got me nowhere.

For example you know how the file explorer is supposed to only take up a quarter of the page? Well with this monitor it's like if you zoomed into 200% view lol.

Or the hover over text on chrome is huge compared to what it should be like.

I'll post some pictures of what I mean in a little bit when I get up and go to the computer.

@Stuxnet same issue 🤦‍♂️ but I'm not looking at such magnified level.

The monitor resolution is stucked at 1024*768.

It's a dual boot laptop and on windows I can easily change monitor resolution to 1366*768.

xrandr cannot help me and got error when I try to reconfigure Xorg.

Might as well do a distro hop while I'm wasting this much time fixing it 😒

I got called an "r word fanboy" for defending Windows and calling it easy to use. The fanboying in this community can be pretty cancerous these days

anyway... if Windows didn't have WSL... maybe.. but then what happens when I have to use photoshop right, or any x other program that'll take an hour to find if there's a ubuntu flavor, then another hour to curse and re-install windows on flash drive.

@hash-table I won't say like I have some form of disorder or anything. But there are certain things which bug me till I can't do anything else until I fix them. While other might be able to ignore and live with while those. For example, I like to put my cash notes(bills) properly and neatly in my wallet. I can't stand messy and curled cables/wires on my devices. I can't read un-indented code of any language. Etc.

And right resolution is one of them. I must set the highest resolution my devices can give. If I need to see things clearly, I will make icons and text looks bigger later.

🤔 Maybe I do have mild disorders.

Luckily we use mouses and keyboards as daily tools and we spend all of our time on internet.

If we were working in physical world dealing each other face to face and if our tools can harm people, I can't even imagine. 🤣

Well, I also never attached such a tiny monitor to my laptop, which has a HD display, so I maybe just got away...

Try to run twm using startx without an xorg.conf. If that works, you should take a look if there's some "legacy config" that got into your way.

My best guess is that it's a driver issue. That, or the monitor isn't properly advertising its supported resolutions (happens in my Raspberry Pi that's hooked onto my TV over HDMI) so you'd have to force a certain resolution (you can do this in xrandr). First I'd look at the drivers though. Usually the generic drivers work no problem, but chances are that Lubuntu just didn't install them.

My old HP Pavilion dm1 netbook has the same resolution, with some AMD APU in it. It's been a while since I've installed that system, but on another one with an ATI GPU (pretty old hardware!) I had an issue with starting the X server until I installed.. apparently on that machine the package is called xf86-video-ati. Anyway, be sure to look whether the proper display drivers are installed.

On Ubuntu it looks like you can search for "xserver-xorg-video" and see whether your particular drivers are installed, if any. Also, if vesa is installed, that's the issue and you should change to a driver more tailored towards your GPU series.

Finally, be sure to make a system backup before working on GPU drivers, especially if you aren't familiar with recovery from TTY.

@Stuxnet yep similar issue. I installed Mint (Mate Desktop) and use xrandr to fix it.

Couldn't use the same solution on my previous lubuntu.

Oh and I also use the recommended proprietary driver from Nvidia.

Thats one reason why I use windows as well btw ;)
