It really sucks as a text editor. It is hard for me to completely dislike something this much. But boooooo does Atom suck.

@FrodoSwaggins For me, I'd say the extra load of Electron is worth it in the case of VS Code. Having all extensions so easily available, and having an active community to back me up is nice. Obviously not for everyone though.

@irene Don't do C/C++ :) What would you usually use for that? Sublime? Is there any proper IDE for it?

tbodt7426y@FrodoSwaggins I dug around and in the 800 MB uncompressed atom app bundle there's 150 MB for a copy of chrome, 300 MB for a copy of git, and another 300 MB for a compressed version of the exact same copy of git. the remaining 50 MB is shitloads of node_modules. so not entirely chrome's fault.

tbodt7426y@FrodoSwaggins @tbodt wait there's more: a 44.4 MB "test.log" file, 65 MB of files called "parser.c", a 25 MB less-compile-cache directory, a 14 MB .tags file in what-the-diff, and don't forget 11 MB of emoji. all of the above is compressed so it doesn't take up quite that much space, but it's still entirely useless.

tbodt7426y@FrodoSwaggins @tbodt lmao I just checked the atom repository and the latest commit to master is a merge of https://github.com/atom/atom/... which says "This change fixes an issue that caused some of Atom's installation packages (like the .rpm package) to gain around 2x in size (135 MB to 270 MB) between Atom 1.30 and 1.31."

tbodt7426y@FrodoSwaggins I'm mainly thinking of download size here, my internet is 3 mbps so I really care about this
