Gamemaker studio 2's 2019 roadmap just got released.. Still no Linux IDE (FFS) but it only took them how many years to realise that not every developer is a malicious cunt and give us the ability to disable to sandbox file system?!

I swear they add and change stuff that is so trivial instead of focusing on the engines major problems and absent features, eg. Can't use SVG graphics, the need to be exported in flash (SWF) because you know, makes sense?

    Runtime GIF saving? WTF?

@ScriptCoded Can't think of a single use case for it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Never really understood why anyone would use game maker over alternatives... I get it if it's for beginners just getting into programming, but beyond that, what use is it?
  • 2
@hexc it's evolve significantly, it is actually a very common engine for a fair few indie titles that almost everyone would have heard of

Fair enough, I just remember the last time I looked into it it was super basic, 2d, not really programming, but more logic block type stuff...
  • 2
@hexc 100% different now, the coding language has become much more robust and yes it is primarily 2D but I'll hunt down a 3D framework someone is working on...

Still has the logic block mode but using the GML features in GMS 2 is actually pretty great

@hexc And here we are, made in GMS 2 and even I find it hard to believe

@lxmcf I mean thats cool and all, but why not just use unity or unreal at that point? I'm assuming performance of 3d wouldn't be great considering 3d is not built directly into GameMaker...

@hexc just comes to preference, pretty sure he is doing it because he can, and GM does have built in 3D but it's not as easy as unity or unreal...

As always though, it's just another engine that comes to preference ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@hexc the last time you checked it was somewhere in 2005 then? I started programming in GameMaker (back then it was 6, used it until studio).

Studio 2 is where i stopped using it because of subscription model.

Its a really nice tool to make quick graphical things. Mockups etc.

Also there has been 3D support since GM6 as well.you had to enable 3D rendering and develop your own Z-axis.

    @Codex404 subscription model?

    There's a subscription model? 0.o

@lxmcf studio 2 is paid yearly. Or they cancelled that idea because people where angry about it. Either way they lost me as customer.

@Codex404 well I have had a permanent licence since day 1?

There is a $39 USD tier that lets you export to windows and Mac only and that's a 12 month licence buy that is it other than the full console modules?

@lxmcf 12 month buy is a yearly subscription...
  • 0
@Codex404 yeah but that's for essentially a test version, the $99 licence is permanent and lets you export to Linux.

And pretty sure the $39 their was introduced last game jam

@lxmcf hmm I stopped using it after they said it would be fully subscription (about a year before the release). They might have canceled that idea after the shitstorm they got about it.

@Codex404 must have, I must have missed when they announced that
