Modern hardware is rubbish. I recently donated a load of computers from the 1970s and 1980s to a technology museum, they all worked well and could still be used and set up in the museum's displays. My more recent stuff, from the last few years, I decided to sell on eBay. Some of it just had to be thrown out, mostly due to non-replaceable batteries that would no longer charge. What nonsense is this? Why is it easier to use a 35-year-old computer than a 3-year-old Chromebook or 5-year-old iPad?

it's about the evolution of capitalism. any good was being designed to last by then (from cars to refrigerators). now they're being designed to force you into buying a new one every two years.

@cors Was just about to say this, thanks for the link :) In today's world most things are just made to break. However when you know your way around hardware some of these things can be hacked and made usable again.

i see hardware related kickstarter campaigns emerging now and then. they appear to be more idealistic about privacy and robustness concerns, but i've never actually looked too deeply into any of them.
