Elyz69656yWe're all struggling here 😁 such a good time. Mind if I ask what level of school you go to? Just curious
-
@Stuxnet oh trust me, I still struggle... A lot.. Just with other things related to the field
-
@Elyz stands for Advanced Placement. Basically it's just the English, more fancier sounding version of datamatiker 😂 and hey nice meeting a fellow Dane 😄
-
@Elyz Not a bachelor. The thing before. You've heard of 'Datamatiker' right? That's it. Its just the english version
-
@Elyz hmm. well okay then. But now I can't help but curious. What degree did you get?
-
@Elyz nice :D would you mind if I ask a couple of questions? We're done January next year, so whether to take a bachelor or not is a huge topic in my class right now 😅
-
@Elyz thanks 😁 so what is it you actually do? Just backend? Or do you also learn about some frontend stuff?
And I guess it's also relevant to ask in which part of the country your taking it :P -
Elyz69656y@KasperNS I'm in Copenhagen. Basically we do a bit of everything as it's a "classic" computer science degree. Meaning we have classes in everything from discrete math and algorithms to designing user interfaces, databases and just general "software development in teams" projects. This semester I have a class on functional programming, mobile app development, my second year project which is about scrum and developing software in a large team, and a class on project organization.
-
@Elyz hmm that surprises me a bit. Kinda just sounds like a continuation of what we're doing. I mean besides functional programming and descrete math classes. We haven't done anything like that 😅 also thought the bachelor would be almost solely focused on backend
-
Elyz69656y@KasperNS well it probably is on some universities, depends on what you want really. I'd definitely say we have more backend than frontend but we kinda have to at least have an idea of how all of that works as well. It also boils down to personal choice a lot. I chose mobile app development (which is a class focused on the backend of mobile apps but also has a small frontend element) and I chose a semester project with a company who wanted us to do a webapp. Probably could've landed myself in some deep backend-only kind of projects and classes if I wanted to. You get a lot of flexibility to choose. I'd say the worst is all the classes about the development process. So many classes on scrum and agile and how to not hate other people when you try to write code with them 😂 how would you go about doing a bachelors? Is it just like an extension of your current degree so you just need to do another year or what?
-
@Elyz yeah I'm in Esbjerg, so it's probably just a tiny bit different over here 😅 but yeah for the ones who take the bachelor, it's 1,5 years extra school, so just an extension. Personally I'm not going to take it, as it's not really relevant for me, however I'm a sucker for information, hence me asking 😂
But I feel you about the whole scrum thing. On 2nd semester we had to use scrum, and last semester we had to use XP. luckily this semester we can choose whatever we want, so guess who's going with kanban 😎 -
Elyz69656y@KasperNS that's cool :) it definitely isn't for everyone and if you're tired of school, I don't blame you for not wanting another year and a half. Great that you get to pick. We usually have to follow the course guidelines and don't get to choose. XP, kanban and waterfall were curriculum last semester but we didn't get to actually do it, just hear about it.
-
@Elyz really? We've finished every semester with a 4 week project period, with the two last semesters making a project for a real customer. What school is it you go to exactly?
But yeah, I didn't take a gap year or anything, so I've been constantly in school since I was 6(21 now), so I just wanna get out and work 😅 -
Elyz69656y@KasperNS oh we have projects. Usually we have a project each semester that lasts for the full 15 weeks. This semester we have a project with a real customer, the previous semesters have been projects just for the sake of school. The projects are aligned with the other classes we have, so we did a Google maps-esque project while we had an algorithms class so we could apply Dijkstras algorithm and stuff like that. I prefer not to get specific about where I go to school as I'd be way too easy to find (girl in software development - pretty easy to find her if you know her school) and I feel ya on wanting to just get to work. I even took a gap year and I just wanna get to work too at this point 😂
-
@Elyz ah that's totally fair, I respect that. But now I'm just confused.. You had full fledged projects, but you didn't work with scrum or kanban etc? 😅
-
@Elyz wow, that sounds rough. Especially the part about having to work with waterfall 😅 we were basically told "this is stupid. You should never use in it."
-
@Elyz well I get drunk a lot anyway, so that's not anything new 😂 but yeah definitely confirmed my opinion about not taking a bachelor 😂
-
@Elyz sounds a bit like what I'm doing to myself right now, with the only thing keeping me alive, is knowing that's it's done next year 😂
-
@Elyz yeah the feeling too well. I recently started letting myself relax again. I've been spending the better part of lsst year learning Linux, server administration, docker, kubernetes and electronics, alongside with all the things we're studying in school. I'm a huge tv/movie freak, but I had like 200 unwatched episodes, and that's just from the shows that I actually follow 😅
-
Elyz69656y@KasperNS aw shit. I don't even dare log on Netflix or hbo. I'd be so depressed if I knew how much I had missed during the past year and a half since I started uni 😂 can't wait for summer break so I can hopefully get a bit of a break, but I'm likely just going to be working every day all summer, haha.
-
@Elyz oh and I wouldn't call the thread ruined. Just made it better in a different way than expected 😊
-
@Elyz yeah I'm using a website called trakt.tv to keep track of my shows, and not only does it tell you how many episodes you're missing, it also tells you how many hours that accumulates to 😅😅
-
@Elyz haha that'd be great 😂 however through all my hard work I think I've gotten Stockholm syndrome. I'm kinda addicted to constantly learning new stuff 😅😅 and yes, I am aware of how absolutely stupid that sounds...
-
@Elyz thank God I'm not the only one 😂 but hey, if you start to develop an interest in system administration, you will never run out of things to work on ;)
-
@Elyz really? Well we're all different I guess. For me there's nothing better than setting a server up, and seeing it running 😂
-
@Elyz yeah I think that makes quite the difference. I mean like what I want to do for our exam project this is, is something I'm really excited for.
Making a CI/CD server, where it automatically builds every pull request. Also I want it to be on Google cloud, with a VPC, install a VPN and local DNS, or maybe a local reverse proxy or something, so you can just go to ${pull_request_id}.staging and do some manual integration testing on it.
Yeah if it's not obvious I'm going for a career in DevOps 😅 -
@KasperNS Yea it does lol. Don't mind me tho. Just passing through as I mute the notifs
-
@subs well thanks for the advice, but seeing as I want to work in DevOps, a bachelor in software dev is not as relevant to me 😅
-
@subs hmm, I must admit that I haven't looked hard around for it, so there might be. However I literally don't think I would survive it. I don't relax when I get home, I read up on things, learn new things, I push myself constantly. I was actually close to burning out last year.
So I really don't think I'd survive another year and a half 😅 but who knows, things can change, and maybe I'll go back later in my life and take it
So I'm the typical nerd in my class, who studies a lot, and really dives into the topics.
It's really fun to see when other people are struggling with something. That means I can try to help them, and I just get a lot of joy out of helping people 😊
