Just had one of the most cringiest HR interview ever. I'm looking for a new job, and yesterday applied for several med/senior backend developer positions and immediately got response from a well known software company.

We schedule a call today 9:00am, so I take homeoffice and wake-up half an hour earlier than usual.

First thing I notice, lady is 5mins late, but okay its morning, we're all humans, so I don't mind it even though some other person might call it a classical sign of disrespect and hangup right away.

First question: Why did you apply for our company?
- Euhhmm cause I'm looking for a new job and I saw your job ad yesterday?

Second question: Why would you like to work at our company?
- Left speechless.. Well I honestly don't know, not really following your company, I know that you exist but that's about it, shouldn't you be telling me this? (*heavy breathing on the other side*)

The rest of interview left me quite uninterested due to initial questions, like what the hell, I can imagine these being alright for interns and junior developers who might be fascinated by opportunity to work for a big and well known company to build their CV, but c'mon I've went through shit already and honestly don't care for who I work for as long as they have interesting projects, are paying me right and have couple small benefits I'm looking for such as homeoffice, gym card etc..

@Alice well I had lots of interviews in my career, and don't really recall any of those questions even when talking with bigger companies such as Microsoft, Jetbrains or ESET.

These interviews are supposed to be there for company to hear more specifics about candidates themselves and vice-versa, and not how one is fanboy of their company and was just waiting for their job ad to come out to apply..

Dunno, might be something normal where you work, but here in Prague where developer market is huge these questions are cringy af 🤷‍♂️🙈

Usually when you apply for a job, you provide the reasons.

Otherwise, if they contacted you and want to interview/hire you, they provide those reasons.

    It's common sense/knowledge.

The way you handled the interview ended up looking like you're unprepared for the interview and disinterested. They would rather hire someone interested.

Also, someone who doesn't put in at least some thought and doesn't inform himself seems like someone who doesn't want to put in even the most basic work into it, even before starting to work. To most people that seems like a red flag for someone that will do the same at work, and won't do the required work even when hired. It's may also seem like someone with low initiative and ambition.

I'm not saying you are like that, since I don't know you, but what happened may make you come off sounding as what I described. Hence the heavy breathing. She probably wanted to end the call right then and there, same as you.

Honestly I've got disinterested as soon as I've heard those two questions.

I'm aware that HR can't ask many questions interesting to developers, but I was expecting some more down to the earth questions, not a questionere where you need to state that you're jerking off to their company..

It's just too much out there and if this is something I was supposed to be prepared for to work at their company, I've no doubt made a right call by not proceeding..

As others have pointed out, those questions are there to gauge your interest in the company. Your clearly not interested enough to do basic research about the company and/or job description.

Sure you may be applying for senior roles but if your not willing to do some basic research into the company how can they be sure your the right fit for the job and your interested in the role at all and not simply just spamming your c.v. to any company with an open job ad?

I am not intending this to come off as harsh btw, I just playing devils advocate here :)

No worries, I get it, apparently we weren't a good fit for eachother anyways 💁‍♂️

It's totally cringy when companies act in interviews as if they were Apple and Google combined.

I always just pick a technology in the ad and say I want to work for you to build my skill in X technology.

These questions suck, and they reward quality bullshit. I like to trololo on these types of calls
