I lost count of the amount of times I've seen a cpanel or flask interface port wide open to the world wide web on a website, the Shodan browser extension is a great tool to show how easy it is to find those login screens

@Linux I don't have issues with it. OK, I have a manual htaccess, and I didn't install any stuff via Softaculous. But the Awstats and other statistics are nice, and the file manager is also ok. The available webmailers can be useful if I'm not on my home PC.

@Fast-Nop you don’t have issues with it because all their scripts kind of work. When you do have issues, good luck fixing them, as only cPanel knows how their shitpile of crappy bash and perl scripts work.

@xalys same for most software. Linux runs with your hardware, systemd works, and pulseaudio also? Fine, but good luck if it doesn't. Windows runs fine? Yeah, but if updates shoot your PC, you're in for a lot of suck.

cpanel makes it also impossible to search for problems or yourself, and also makes it practically impossible to change the configs on the server manually, because the shitpile of configs that it generates.

@Fast-Nop no. With open source software, you’re not restricted to a vendor to know how to fix your problems. Even if you don’t use open source software - cPanel scripts are crap. Crap code quality, crap functions, way too complicated and making it impossible for actual sysadmins to manage systems.

Not even starting about the code mess and the horrible structure.

Sure, a CP can be fun to start out with, but when you manage lots of servers *and* you know how server internals work, building a custom system is *always* a better option.

The only reason big companies use cPanel is because they didn’t know how to do it themselves and they can’t just migrate to a custom solution.

The front end may look nice, but cPanel is nothing more than a bunch of crappy muddled up Perl scripts with inconsistent code, duplicate libraries and a shitload of legacy.

Regarding Plesk - ever noticed it just deleted Dovecot for you when your server crashes? Yeah, you didn’t, because sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t... How come? No one knows.. except Plesk.. thus a real sysadmin won’t know how to fix issues.

A CP is supposed to make your life easier, but when you take servers and quality seriously, it only makes things complicated by locking you into their crappy idea of how things should work. And they convince you of a certain way how things work because they’ve got 10 years of legacy, while building your own system or not using any CP at all means you only have stuff running that you configured, thus increasing quality.

A CP does *not* make your life easier at a certain scale.
