I understand the desire people have to use an open source driver for their graphics card, but it feels like that's not the only reason people seem averse to using nvidia's closed-source driver on linux. I have used it for years, and never had a problem, and though I have an admittedly specific use scope, I would like to know what it is that people dislike about it. What problems do you have with it?

    Did you ever try to install it without a ready-to-use package.

    What is not a "ready-to-use package"? It's not like you have to compile it from source. In the worst case you have to download an installer and run it.

    ...and that's what I do. Is that supposed to be problematic? It's always worked great for me.
