Dealing with YouTube's shitty recommendation algo for several years now makes me lose faith in recommender systems in general.

@sbiewald that was a good read. Touched on most of what I hate about targeted ads/recommendations.

What I hate the most is how I constantly see ads for things on Amazon that are similar to previous purchases. I bought some new headphones and then for two weeks that's all the recs had. But I already had new headphones. I didn't need to buy more...

@EmberQuill I've started to look for a beard trimmer yesterday. I'm already feeling that.

This will be an interesting read.
I may finally understand why Youtube used to recommend me some R-18 Mugen ryona/vore videos back then, and how it recommended my normal Mugen tutorial videos on those.

@sbiewald Great read. Thanks! Wouldn't this suggest that there actually is a niche audience for which recommending awesome things (movies or other things) would be disruptive in the market?

Don't think I've *ever* been impressed by an automated recommendation now that I think about it. They fall into two camps---wrong and obvious.

@JohnnyBvo If we knew the exact needs of the niche, maybe.
But this niche might be too small to be targeted or measurable.
