Hey folks,

Is anyone using a Dell XPS 13 (9370)? This is the 2018/2019 model.

Is anyone of you also facing the thing that is gets extreme hot, when charging? And I really mean only when charging. Not hitting it with a Max load.
Mine gets as hot as it can possibly be and it starts thermal throttling.

On battery, everything is fine and the laptop is cool as ice.
Both situations are under normal load. Nothing heavy ... CPU mostly idle - rarely over 25% utilisation / thread.

I run Linux on it. Not Shure if it is a compatibly thing, this is why I am interested if others are having this issue.

9350, no such thing. At least in powersave mode.

Does it also get hot suspended? What are the ambient and cpu temps?

When charging, on idle around 50-60°, on low load the CPU hits easily 90° and starts throttling.

On battery, temps are rarely above 50° core temp. Even under load.

    Ambient temps are <30°

@Rohr 8th gen cpu is it? Dual or quad core?

@netikras it is an i7-8550 running at default clocks 1.8GHz base

@Rohr not a dell owner but my msi also has similar work principle while charging it goes up to 90degrees and starts active cooling. On battery starts throttling the cpu earlier so it cools “passively”.

@Rohr I thought so. It might be the CPU's issue. I have a Precision at work (i7-8850H hexacore) that behaves similarly. Except it'salways on-cord so it'salways throttling :)

    There are two workarounds.
    - disable Intel Turbo Boost, but that usually means considerable loss of HZs (4.3GHz dropped to 2.6GHz base in my case)
    - lower CPU voltage to achieve lower temperatures (difficult on Linux w/ SecureBoot)
    - drop max CPU frequencies manually, post-boot (cpufreq or manually). I've dropped mine from 4.3GHz to 3.1GHz and I almost never get throttled any more. And the freq drop is not really noticeable :)

These CPUs are too hot for the cooling system present in those laptops. My other coleagues having similar setups (Precisions, XPS15s, etc.) have the same problems.

With every single Dell that I have ever owned it has this issue where each time I place it in sleep mode and open it up the next day it will restart, its the most frustrating thing ever. And its only Dell that has ever done that to me, will never ever buy one again!

Is hot the CPU or battery? When battery is f*cked up they can get pretty hot. If ot is CPU, it is normal that the frequencies are much higher while charging = hotter than when running on battery. How hot it get under load?
