    Always best I find to block anyone like that in advance on Facebook.

    @ManBunMike Mixed feelings? I know..

    @Root

    But what do you replace Facebook with ?

    Where else do you find 2 Billion other folk a finger tip away..
  • 1
    @Nanos why do you need Facebook in the first place?
  • 0
    @-pthread

    Because it has 2 Billion people on it, which is good for networking and getting to know new people.

    Plus, lots of those folk are in specific groups, so a good place to ask questions about how do stuff.

    Kinda like here..

    @Nanos are you friend with all 2 billion people? We just need a small group of people who agree with our ideology and you can find them on privacy friendly social media also. I think who are you talking to don't matter as long as two of you have same interest.

    @-pthread

    > are you friend with all 2 billion people?

    I try to be. :-)

    > We just need a small group of people

    > who agree with our ideology

    Whilst that is nice, I also like to have a very wide spread of friends who have a different ideology.

    > and you can find them on privacy

    > friendly social media also.

    Which other social media sites have 2 Billion users on that I might be able to find specific types of users on ?

    Say, all those who like knitting..

    On Facebook there could be a knitting group with a million users in, which is far better than a knitting group on some other social media platform with one user in it..

    I often have geographical requirements, eg. people in a certain area. There appears no where else to find a lot of people online in the same area, except on Facebook !

    @Nanos one can find people interested in activity s/he is interested on other platform also but as long as one already have an solution s/he doesn't find any alternative. Internet is full of people so, you will find people interested in knitting on other platform also although you may not find that many people as Facebook but they will be enough. I have ditch Facebook and Instagram for a long time and using telegram, devrant etc. As alternatives and it's working fine for me.

    @-pthread

    I look on every other platform I can find, but so far, I barely find anyone.

    <-- Member of 2,000+ platforms..

    Any suggestions I might not have heard of ?

    Try https://www.ravelry.com/
    Note knitting isn't my area of interest but i found about it on reddit and ddg also displays it on first page. You can ask in your current fb group about other knitting community.

    @Nanos I replaced Facebook with nothing because it is entirely pointless.
  • 1
    @Root it has a point, mindless dopamine rewards for mindless interactions. Not to mention data mining and manipulative marketing
  • 1
    @Plasticnova Those aren't points. Those are excuses and crimes.
  • 1
    @Root depends on your viewpoint. For Zuckerberg they are valid points, those points made him rich
  • 1
    @Plasticnova To a criminal, robbing is indeed a valid business plan. To a tyrant, stomping out all resistance is a very desirable best practice. They can both be successful at what they do, even if literally everyone else despises them for it.
  • 2
    @Root but not everyone despises them, which is the real problem. There will always be ~1/3 of the population that will crave tyranny. They want that glorious boot pressing down on their necks, keeps them comfortable
  • 1
    @Plasticnova Truth 😕
  • 2
    @Root believe me, I wish it weren’t. I live in a place full of those types of people, my family is full of those types of people. The tyrants were never the problem, it’s always been the mob behind them that is to fear
  • 2
    @Plasticnova Yeah, we're having that problem over here too. People in this country are bloody insane and are craving the corruption and the total lack of control over their lives. It's vile and revolting and utterly inconceivable to me.
  • 2
    @Root it’s a kind of disappointment that is one of the most difficult to swallow. A shattering of perceptions that leaves you angry, apathetic, and scrambling to find an outlet that could provide some modicum of relief. At least that’s how it’s been for me
  • 2
    @Plasticnova Yeah. 😕
    I don't even know how to out it into words, but I think you did a pretty good job of it.
  • 2
    @Root I’m holding back for sure. Lots of cussing removed lol
  • 2
    @Plasticnova Absolutely haha
    I've been bitching endlessly about these people for years. They make be absolutely livid

    @Root

    Before Facebook I didn't have my own groups full of hundreds of useful people about subject X and Y.

    I only had groups interested in subject Z..

    Because it was so difficult to find people into subject X and Y.

    Facebook is where I found them hanging around.

    @Nanos I guess it depends on your views/principles.

    I dumped Facebook years ago and definitely lost friends that way but I refuse to take part in giving data to that mass surveillance company/engine.
    I also dumped WhatsApp about 5 years ago (its like a first fucking life need over here) and also lost some friends due to that but again, its owned by Facebook and I refuse to take part in giving data to that mass surveillance company/engine.

    @linuxxx

    Coming from a position of having no physical friends anywhere near me, I want to use every tool available to meet some.

    I quite agree though about all the negative aspects of many social media systems.
  • 2
    @Nanos I partially agree; I just draw the line at my personal data being used for the commercial gain of a quite unethical company and the use of a company giving (reportedly) full access to their data to the biggest (illegal) mass surveillance network ever created.

    I do have mastodon instance, for example, but I control that myself and that's acceptable for me :)
