For making Arduinos talk to each other, I recommended the ESP8266. It's essentially an Arduino with built-in Wi-Fi.
Stay away from WiFi shields. ^^ -
@RememberMe Also a possibility, but of course there's the problem with needing a direct cable connection and speed.

I ordered 50 dollars worth of tech: 30 of it was an arduino uno clone with a hella lot of jumper wires and a node mcu

node mcu is just amazing. it's so cheap and really usable for a load of projects that require a small firm factor (wearables) and wifi or Bluetooth
Ordered $12 worth of electronic bits and bobs. They came a day ago and tonight I hooked them up to my raspberry pi. Made some lights blink, pressed some buttons. A solid re-introduction to electronics. This time on my own time and not in school, so I don't automatically hate it. I only got a cheap kit so I don't have many toys to play with but I'm excited to get more. Maybe even buy an Arduino. Maybe even make them talk to each other idk. I'm happy.
