Every god damn time I have to interact with windows I hate it more and more. I sold my old Dell PC, and said I'd install Win10 on it for the dude.

It's now been 2 hours of me trying to figure out why the Win10 installer complains about missing drivers, and trying to figure out exactly what drivers are missing, because they sure as absolute fuck don't tell you.

"A media driver your computer needs is missing. This could be a DVD, USB or Hard disk driver. If you have a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with the driver on it, please insert it now."

Well how the fuck am I supposed to know what driver you need? The least helpful error message in the history of computing....

    I do not recommend this way so use it as last resort.

    You mean installing windows? I heartily agree.

    Also, that seems like a program that's supposed to be run on a machine that actually has windows installed.

    Driver Pack Solution is cancer, go to dell support and download the laptop model driver

    You could find which driver is missing by

    Control Panel>Device Manager

    The yellow warning symbol will tell you which driver are missing.Exception are graphic driver which the Windows load up with its default driver so you have to which graphic driver are actually in your laptop.

    agree with @devTea
    you have Dell = get service tag, go to support page and download the exact drivers for you hardware
    or just use dell assistant and it'll do it automatically

    if the computer doesn't know the device, how is it supposed to tell you, what is missing? the only thing you can get is VID/PID and maybe on which bus is it hanging

    How on earth do you manage to tame linux that has even worse driver support, unless you're a Mac user?

    Windows will install generic drivers that should work 99.99999998% of the time, vendors offer as others had said their own drivers for every pc/laptop model that they decide to be "special"

    @C0D4 In the year that I used this laptop, I must have distro-hopped a half dozen times. None of them gave me any trouble of this magnitude.

    I have dual-boot but I haven't used it in a long time. I was doing something that forced me to use it.

    I only started it twice to do that thing. BOTH TIMES, the first popup was one to format my Linux partition, and I almost clicked "yes" the first time.

    Did you use the media creation tool? Uefi usb boot can be dodgy, dont think it supports ntfs. Media creation tool should allow for it tho

    @gruff Yeah, I think this is what turned out to be the issue.

    None of the 4 boot drives I made, using different drives, ISO's and Linux systems ever worked.

    Pulled out an old win10 machine and used the Media Creation Tool, and it worked the first time.
