Linux

I bought my first VPS today. After years of hosting my email, websites, databases and backups services on my own physical servers both home and in real serverrooms.

Strange feeling, but it feels like something heavy was lifted from myself, I do not need to buy hardware if something fails.

    Welcome to the cloud! 😉

    @kanduvisla
    I prefer not to call it cloud, I am allergic to that word.
    That is why I use the "Cloud to butt" extension for Chrome

    Only people that hate themselves run their own email servers nowadays, @Linux.

    I hate myself.

    Then I hate myself too :)

    Or do I just not trust anyone else?

    @qwerty1337 Both.

    The way I look at it is, hosted email providers like Microsoft have hundreds of (well paid) security people constantly hammering their networks trying to find their way inside as well as an always up to date product with the latest patches and features.

    If you think your infrastructure is more impenetrable than Microsoft with just you running it, I beg you think twice!

    I'd trust Microsoft or Google with my data far more than I would myself.

    Who's the VPS through?

    @drRoss trick there is that these companies are already using your data so them getting hacked should not be a concern .

    @skonteam Exactly! We trust them with our other systems in the cloud... We are not better than them at the stuff they do the best. As soon as we can accept that, the better our lives will be.

    And yet I still have the freedom to have a computer system that I own and or pay for how I want ;)
