So I need your advice guys. Our team is in crisis mode right now because of a vendor's attempt to extort money out of us. So for the next 6 months I am going to be taken off development and made to do sysadmin work...which I hate.

There is another team at work that was trying to woo me over to their team, working in security...which I love.

So would it be a dick move to leave my struggling team that is trying to use a hammer as a screwdriver and do what makes me happy? Or should I be a good person and do work that makes me miserable and go home and drink every night instead?

For what I've learned over the years is that you have to take care for yourself.
Everyone can take care of themselves, you don't have to.

Do what makes you feel happy. Its YOUR life 😉

Leaving your team is bad, but they can forgive you. Can you forgive yourself on givin up this oportunity? Measure the weigth of each decision. How much do you want to be on the other side, will you be able to move to security later? No one can choose for you, but if I were you, I'd go for security. Friends exists outside work. Work is for making money to eat and growing yourself.

@Gexgekko @BikerMouse I didn't know this. All this time I was thinking opposite, that I should stick by my team/colleagues even if I see a better opportunity. Thanks :)

Do what makes you happy. You don't help your team if you're feeling miserable 😉
I also had to learn this the hard way, if you don't like what you do and always try to please others, in the end it's your body and health that scream for a change. Don't let it come to that.
You can only grow and evolve your talents if you like your job 😊

And who says your colleagues don't think about leaving?
