I think the auto driving cars are going to be an all or nothing system to work. Either everybody has one or it'll be near impossible to have it.

Your thoughts, comments, concerns?

i agree, with heavy traffic even self driving cars won't be able to avoid accidents caused by human error. in my opinion every car should be full or at least semi auto driving that will also use protocols that will allow fast communication with nearby cars for fast calculations and responses.

Disagree, the self driving cars are programmed to react in all kinds of situations, even created by humans. And it seems they are more efficient than humans to save lives in those situations.
All-self-driving-cars scenario means almost no accident at all. Some-self-driving-cars scenario means less accidents, computers are just better at reacting than humans in dangerous situations.

Even partial adoption of the technology would make our roads safer. Humans are awful drivers.

@willol true, but still, if there is only one self driving car on the road with 3 lanes and it is in the middle lane, the traffic is pretty heavy but not slow and the car in front suddenly stops or one if the nearby cars suddenly steer into you it's about 95% collision. in some situations they are inevitable becuse of human error. though it is true that the chance of traffic accidents will significantly drop if even every 7th car on the road was self driving.

Not sure about all or nothing but I am sure if the technology was available 20 years ago there would be 100,000+ people alive today who needlessly died or were critically injured as a result of car accidents. So let's get this one right as soon as possible.

@kimailis Yes, I'm not saying they will avoid 100% accidents while three is human drivers, I'm saying this is not an all-or-nothing adoption problem (which was the original question :))

@willol yea, i actually see your point. it depends on how smart the self driving car is actually, but given that it is smart enough, i guess you're right.
