PM: Please get this done by tomorrow. It's just a small change.
Dev: No its not that simple.
PM: Why is it not simple? Please explain so I can understand.
Dev after a hard thought finally explains: blah blah blah
PM: Well, we have promised the client so please do this by tomorrow, thanks.
Dev: *bangwall

    @TktStatusPICNIC I absolutely agree. That really had to be said 😊

    @TktStatusPICNIC It doesn't help when you're salaried.

    @deusprogrammer truth.

    @TktStatusPICNIC I feel the same way about getting fired. I feel like it would almost be a refreshing change. If I went to work tomorrow and my boss called me in and said sorry, we're letting you go, I feel like I would smile, shake his hand, and say thanks for everything.

    Sounds like my PM.

    yay there are also others who are unfraid of being fired like me :)

    It seems like its the problem of your PM, he made that promise. He needs to go back to the client and say it's taking longer than expected.

    Also, sometimes people lie about what they need to get what they want. But the client may not even need it till weeks away ;)

    Have had that exact conversation with someone in the office that thought they the shit and always dealt with the clients, even after explaining I do not want anyone but me speaking to clients of my job. I was lucky though because they forget how little i give a shit for other peoples opinions, boss or no boss. I would do it my way or if not able just left it when people bitch then it already too late deadline is past and they have one of two options: take it as is or bow to my demands

    @chickenbrain this has happened so many times. We need this done by next week, so get started now. I work my ass off to get it done and then it sits unutilized for months and sometimes gets forgotten...I don't work at that place anymore. Arbitrary deadlines piss me off.

    @snypenet it happens too frequent in our industry. planning is def important and they need to be set by the individual/team that is building it.

    Planning is not easy too and sometimes our estimation can be very wrong due to underestimating challenges along the way or whatever other reason.

    I think its important that us dev try to get involve with planning the deadline. if you are in a place that you can't and works become too much i suggest its time to move before you burn yourself out.

    You will def pick up a lot of skill or refine your techniques with these arbitrary deadline however you will pick it up anywhere you work too.
    I guess the question is how long can you work like this?
