How did targeted ads become so...accurate?

I did a search for a new service on Google last night.

Today, an ad appears on my Facebook feed highlighting my search term on Google the night before.

    What's more akward is when it starts showing ads on other members of the networks, devices that matches your typical search inquiry and you notice it..

    Worse yet, when they ask you about it... x)

    The weirdest is: I'm talking to a person in real life about something I have never searched before (in fact it never was on my browser) and i get a flood of ads about that something. I mean how do they know? How CAN they know?

    @sirjofri must be some spy.
    Or similar to my case where just because we're on same network...

    Ad Words, probably. The company I work for actually specializes in tracking ad metrics. Believe me when I say that most, if not all, of your online activity is tracked to some degree by ad agencies in order to get the right ads to your eyes.

    Many are blaming Google analytics for this, but in this particular case (showing ads in Facebook) is related to the sharing Facebook plugin or any FB plugin within the page.

    And since WhatsApp and messenger are now owned by Facebook, your conversations can now relate to products.

    The Google part is mainly for the ads during searchs or the paid service for displaying ads from Google.

    So... Yeah it's becoming ad hell.

    Personally everytime I search for anything I use a private window.
