I wonder how many devs are learning English on devRant.

I'm kind of sad I don't get a chance to practice any (spoken) languages.

What I'm interested to know is what challenges English as a Second Language developers face because most programming languages are based in English.

@Sotch-pr35mac it is very difficult in the beginning but then you start to understand that most of documentation/best workarounds/ etc...are written in english. I dont bother to search for stuff in spanish...

@Sotch-pr35mac if I learn english, a set of challenges are created and I push a challenge in which it is to try to understand why sentences stick together is true and having semicolon is false. Therefore, for me the difficulty is true.

@spongessuck here in the Netherlands, English is taught from young age. So dutch devs already have a pretty good understanding of the english language before starting to dev.

But... what prevents you from practicing yourself (to speak in) another language?

@Prutser just that there's no environment for it that in involved in. I know there's things like buzuu where you mutually learn with native speakers, but it doesn't sound fun. Plus I don't have a whole lot of free time.

@Sotch-pr35mac, programming languages are easy to get once you learn the basics of English. At least on my country, Argentina, most high schools have mandatory English classes so when you start programming you're already set up. The important thing is to learn to read and really understand what you read, and also to express yourself enough to ask questions and make productive searches. Technology changes too fast, and most content doesn't even get translated before it's already obsolete or, to use programming jargon, "deprecated".
