SDK’s API’s TODO’s ...

Is anyone else allergic to the wrong use of apostrophes instead of the plural form? I see this everywhere.

    Yes, but the theory behind when and where to use an apostrophe is so complex and contradicting that... it doesn't really matter anymore in this day and age.

    @rutee07 it's ++s 😏 but it looks wrong without the ' 😕

    @C0D4 It's a contraction. To put it simply, when it could be two words, it always has an apostrophe. When it's plural it never has an apostrophe. Other cases get complicated, but these two rules always stand.

    @C0D4 That really does feel like "pre-increment s"

    @homo-lorens yes, it's when you walk into the possessive nouns and plurals and such that it's (is that even the right one) a wild ride of maybe.

    1. the character you complain about is actually NOT an apostrophe. This is apostrophe: '
    Also called a "single quote" by american cavemen. But it's an apostrophe.

    ` <- this is "backtick" (as far as I know, no idea about any other names), the thing you're actually complaining about.

    and no, I don't have any idea why people use those instead of proper apostrophes, either. probably keyboard layout + laziness thing.

    My proper apostrophe ' is on rAlt+P, and I have no problems using it correctly.

    @C0D4 @rutee07

    It's also annoying that it differs per language.

    In Dutch, where the apostrophe is only used to lengthen vowels at the end of words, and separate the s from abbreviations & digits:

    Bittersweets piano's, Rutees vibrators, C0D4's tv's

    vs. English:

    Bittersweet's pianos, Rutee's vibrators, C0D4's TVs

    @Midnight-shcode my rant is about the wrong use of apostrophe when plural s is correct.
    There are many SDKs, not many SDK’s.

    The different characters which look similar and are used for apostrophes is a different matter.
    I’m not so much allergic to those.

    I’m aware of the backticks `
    But I’ve been using this character for apostrophes: ’
    There is also this one: ‘
    And the single quote: '

    I was wondering which one is the correct apostrophe but iOS is autosuggesting this one: ’
    So, are you sure about the single quote? Surely iOS does use and suggest the correct apostrophes :)

    @Lensflare Yeah iOS’s apostrophe is correct, as opposed to Android's apostrophe.
  • 1
    Same! My fellow Brazilians do it all the time

    @Lensflare the ones you get suggestedby iOS looks like fancystrope, one of utf variants that exist purely for aesthetic reasons - same thing as when ms word replaces "simple quotes" by the fancy ones, on the bottom of line for the start, and top of the line for end.
