Me: I think our customer should have to specify this thing.

Someone else: Let's do what we can to be really flexible for them.

Me Later: Yeah well our super flexibility now makes these queries they want impossible .....

Me: What would you like?

Customer: I don't want to tell you how to do your job. Just do the best you can.

Choose defaults for them and make the advanced settings available but hard to find. Then if they say you don't have enough flexibility, tell them that indeed you do.

Yeah they're getting a checkbox now.

They can do the magic in their own head if X is Y and tell us so nobody has to deal with someone's rando business logic based on god knows what.
