That's weird, here in North East Ohio we're hiring for a paid internship. Put the word out to the local University and got 3 responses...

What kind of dev are you?

Confident in back end/front end. I know Java, C, C++, SQL, python; php, javascript, AJAX, HTML, CSS. I recently learned and started playing with some functional languages such as Scheme and started messing with prolog also. I work on a game engine in my free time. Just to give you an idea.

@shittywebdev for some reason there's not too many software internships out here.

There's a ton our here in Phoenix. And most of them are paid.

@ExcellentSP oh, I'm definitely looking for paid internships as well. However, I don't mind putting in the time in exchange for professional experience with a company. Money will come, I assume.

Keep calling! It only takes one yes. Make a couple hundred calls and you should get a few nibbles.
Don't call HR. Get to the section maker. Show them the value you will bring. Do they have a crappy web site? That's good for you.
People like to help people so if the decision maker does not have a job for you ask if they have any contacts you can call. When you call the contact say the first person suggested you call.

Do you have a portfolio? That is your resume. Good luck and please keep us informed.

You can come work for me for free. My backlog of things to program is never ending. 😝
