I overheard this on my way back to home.

Girl 1: I bought a new phone yesterday.
Girl 2: Let me see it.
*hands over the phone*
Girl 2: There is no Instagram?
Girl 1: No, Instagram wasn't installed when I bought the phone.
Girl 2: That's weird.

*me almost dead*

    Not surprised even a bit.
    .
    .
    .
    that Instagram was not installed.

With the amount of crap that comes factory installed for example on a branded Android device (read "non-Nexus"), this actually makes some sense.
  • 0
@kamen that might be the case 🤔
  • 0
Why am I not surprised ?
  • 13
At least it had the Camera app preinstalled.
  • 1
@theMEARD naah they were just some random stragers on the bus
  • 1
@theMEARD lol never came across them ever after
  • 4
@codeJS that's not weird for me, a week ago, one girl was saying to me that she will not make ID on G+, as she already have Google ID.....
  • 6
I don't understand why this conversation is interesting or why it has no many ++s.
  • 3
@starless The ++ is not as much for the poster as it is for each devRanter as a symbol of saying "(facepalm) idiot"
  • 5
@RStrydom I don't get the facepalmable thing, though. They're just discussing default programs on smartphones.
  • 6
@starless Most people understand that an OS and app builders are usually separate entities. So it's silly for anyone to assume that "their" favourite social app is already installed. On top of that the way this girl reacted, completely shocked, just indicates that she has given this eco system almost no thought at all. Ignorance can be annoying, it can be funny, it can be both at the same time which is the case here and why a facepalm is exactly that, a sigh and a chuckle at the sillyness of humankind
  • 4
@RStrydom based on OP's post, I'm not sure that's what's going on. Nowhere do I see anyone conflating app builders with OSes. They didn't even mention an OS. They were just surprised that Instagram wasn't pre-installed on their friend's phone.

You sure that you're not letting your own biases color your impression of what's happening here?
  • 1
@starless What is your opinion on why this post is interesting or has so many ++s?
  • 3
@RStrydom I think people believe the explanation you've given, but I think they're being kind of wrong-headed about it.
  • 5
@starless the facepalm is not because they're just discussing default apps on phone, its because they thought that instagram is a default app.
It may be a patronizing facepalm, but nonetheless in my opinion its a well justified one.
  • 3
@bioDan as another commenter mentioned, sometimes it is.

Sure, they might not quite get that there are tons of tiny android customizations phone companies make, but they're really not far from the mark.
  • 4
    @starless I agree :)
But we can also have a little patronizing giggle about their ignorance and lack of understanding in how the market and industry works.

I'm actually waiting for a manufacturer to just create a very lightweight widget with a "Recommended 'basic' apps" section (that mandatory "can" be turned off). That way, we can justify the rant that the preinstallation of non-essential apps is silly and stupid.
  • 3
Back in my country kiosk owners charge around 1 to 3 $ to install an app on people's phones. Take advantage of their stupidity, offer them what they need
  • 2
@starless I'm sorry, but it's ignorant, stupid, entitled shit like this that shows how hopeless people can be. The fact that kids can run around with hundreds of £/$ worth of smartphone and not have the slightest idea how they work and what an app is and where they come from is a disgrace. When I own something I know what it does, I familiarise myself with its functionality and I do a bit of research before I buy it. The fact that people just blindly consume cause they are mindless trend chasers and lack the minimal glimmer of intelligence required to know what the fuck you are doing just shows how stupidity and ignorance is fucking encouraged. I hate flippant stupidity and I hate that we tend to glamorise being a dumb fuck and don't encourage intelligence, resourcefulness and critical thinking. I have blown this way out of proportion but fuck it, it's called devRant for a reason..

@ALivingMemory so, are you your own mechanic? Tell me, how does one butcher a cow so that the bacteria doesn't contaminate your steak? For that matter, can you hunt enough meat to keep yourself fed? Have you ever grown a crop? Made your own bread, jelly, syrups? Shelter?

I assume there's at least one of those things that you know nothing about but consume, quite possibly passionately. Treating a technology that's as ubiquitous as food and cars as something other than that is blind egoism. There's nothing that raises cell phones above food, transportation in our society. If blissful ignorance (or a vague sense of how things work) is in other matters, phones should be no exception.

Instagram was not installed what a buch of idiots those phone companies are 😂😂😂
  • 1
@starless this is not about how to make an app. I said nothing about expecting those girls to be devs. It's about knowing how to use the finished product. I know how to eat steak and how i like it done and how to cook it, just as I know how to wash and store vegetables and different methods of preparing/cooking them. I know that syrup is good on pancakes and the many ways to maintain my shelter (i.e. work the heating, fix leaks/wear and tear, turn lights on and off, recognise faults/cracks in the wall). You have missed the point completely...
  • 1
@ALivingMemory could you clarify this a bit for me? I'm struggling to see how one girl noticing that Instagram isn't installed by default an example of her not knowing how to use a phone.
  • 3
The question was "There is no Instagram?" Not "You haven't installed Instagram yet?". I'm starting to wonder if you'd be making such a fuss if the OP said it was 2 teenage boys, just chucking it out there.. Get off the defensive, they were being dumb, why do you feel the need to defend them?
  • 1
@ALivingMemory I always wonder the same.
  • 1
@ALivingMemory that's a pretty pedantic distinction- I think the meaning's the same. At the very least, there's ample room to award the benefit of the doubt.

And no, if there ever were a thread where a bunch of guys are laughing at how bad guys are with cell phones, I wouldn't defend them. Odds are, they were just dumb guys. Unfortunately, there's a large body of statistics that say that people are really bad at determining if it's just girls being dumb. This pattern of behaviors has real impacts.

So yeah, if there's a chance that a girl does understand what's going on, but communicates the situation in such a way that one could infer that she doesn't, I'm gonna watch for it and stand on her side. Lord knows no one else here will.
  • 2
@ALivingMemory Think you nailed it on the head. Don't believe anyone has indicated any specific harshness just because they are female. Think that this is an issue of people with lower intelligence and looking for a simple reason to argue age old debates proxy isolated, non-related situations.
  • 1
I genuinely think the OP wasn't intending to take the piss out of dumb girls.. pretty sure it was just a despair of clueless people in general, regardless of gender. If I overhear someone being retarded, I'll be rolling my eyes no matter what kind of arbitrary flavour of human they are. Get off your high horse and lighten up a bit, you know full well that the people in question didn't have a clue about their shiny new phones and you chose to interpret it as them simply stating that it's unusual for Instagram to not be pre-installed, come on, read it again lol

Lol. We can't imagine our lives without social media anymore. I set up an experiment. I was not using any social media except WhatsApp for a month. When I came back to the digital world, I realized how many things I'd missed. The fact is those are really useless ones. My girlfriend is a blogger, so she can't leave Instagram. She gets money for that. But I know she uses https://famoid.com/buy-instagram-fo... to cheat.
