Hi Devs Veterans,

Does doing PSM/CSM certification help developers move to a management or Engineering Technical Manager position?

I think it depends on the company. Where I work they focus on engineering and architecture, along with mentoring and communications skills. So if you have all those things + certs, sure. Granted I work in a large company, so mileage may vary on how many other companies that would indeed help you at. However, at most good places I’ve worked, managers are good engineers with soft skills and business acumen. I run 6 teams and I have no certs…so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Certifications are a funny thing.. I got a few of them because my employer at the time had some incentives, but at the same time I tell every single recruiter or possible client that bring them up that certifications are worthless as evidence of anything. Look at what I have done, not what I scored on some test I took right after reading a book.

The industry needs to be educated on this, and I for one am doing my part.
