I am done with people, I just want one single room, with good internet, dual monitor setup... And I can spend my whole life like that... Being social, fuck that shit... I have devRant for that... and rest, I just want to code, listen to music, drink coffee and sleep like hell...

Why is it that I can understand some other dev's code faster that understanding someone's feelings. Why is it that I am good with principles of Programming Languages, but not the basic Principles of Humanity... Yes, I agree I don't have feelings, but is it wrong not to have feelings, I am a dev, I am supposed to be good with Codes, not humans... I want to be in my small space of close people. (My family), and that's it... I am no good with others. I hate Facebook, but love devRant, I spend more time on StackOverflow than that on WhatsApp. Why is it so... Why

I joined recently. I'm not a full-fledged developer yet, but I'm studying web interface development and am looking for employment possibilities, since my near complete Food Production Technology degree doesn't give me many possibilities in the first place. I want to go the full stack developer route. I discovered the devRant app recently and am in love with the community. Thanks for existing! (^-^)

@BlueNutterfly This is an awesome community

I've worked with developers like you. Remember that being bad with people doesn't automatically give you super powers somewhere else. Find a good person with social skills and partner with them for projects and it'll be fine.

@starless Ok, will try, thanks for your 2 cents though... :-)

Fucking hell, I'm so done with this meme of "all devs are asocial".

Let me help you fix this: give a shit.

Sincerely try to care why someone acts the way that they do, even when it's hard and what they do is annoying. Almost no one is trying to be annoying, they are trying the best they can *from their perspective*.

"Being social" costs energy but also provides value. You will receive empathy, empowerment and freedom. Listen, think about their context, act accordingly.

@GriffinSauce yeah! There are so many posts like this. It's embarrassing to read these 'just want to code, bro' posts. They should immediately quit this lifestyle and go back and learn the social behaviors they were supposed to learn in 3rd grade. 'People' aren't the problems - it's these posters. Being a developer isn't much different than being a construction worker - except you are alone. No construction workers are saying - "man, just leave me alone and let me hammer." These people are afraid of other people because they are maladapted to basic human interaction. This is not something to be proud of. It like a ten year old who doesn't want to learn to read, because "it's stupid!"

@GriffinSauce I totally agree mate. I'm sick of this whole rite of passage that you have to be asocial to be a developer, its bullshit and i think it is the complete opposite of what you really need.

I personally am not an overly social person by default and have to put a lot of effort into it and a lot of people on the outside think I'm just naturally that way.

This idea that to be a good developer you have to fit what society shows and tell us we need to be is absolute crap.

A lot of developing is dealing with people and if you're not practicing that in your own life, you are setting yourself up to fail at work.

@sheriffderek I agree completely mate. Funny thing is that I was a carpenter for 10 years before I switched to become a developer haha.
  • 2
You do realise you can change eh? You're not stuck being the 'you' you are today forever.
  • 2
@GriffinSauce there are people for whom this is much more difficult than you seem to understand. It's not only about giving shit.
  • 2
Idk who said anything about having an asocial personality making you a better (or worse for that matter) dev.. BUT I will say that theres no phsycological BS with code, no hidden agenda. What you see is what you get. Ive never had a code snippit try and manipulate me.. but hey, that just me...

@elazar the OP didn't say he wished he had better social skills or that he was uncomfortable, he said he wanted to sit in a room by himself and 'code.' Everyone is pro happiness, but it's just pathetic how pant posts on here are championing how cool it is to program 24/7. It's not.
  • 2
@elazar yes there are people that have a lot of issues with social interaction. I used to be one of those people. It can be hard to overcome, for some tiny amount of people even impossible.

That is a minority though. Humans are social beings by default. We evolved this way because it has massive advantages. I'm not even talking about the social/psychological level: look up mirror-neurones. We have specific physical structures in our brain that facilitate empathy.
  • 2
@kdev honest, open people also don't try to manipulate each other. I think it's more worthwhile to try and cultivate the right social environment than to act as if you can close off from it completely.
